wtnhunt
Would suggest shooting a few different brands and weights through the gun and see what it likes best.
Strut10
With factory ammo the 30-30 is a 2-weight gun: 150 gr and 170 gr. Which one you choose is really a toss-up. The 150 gr. bullet has a minimal power edge over the 170 gr out to 100 yards. But, I'd think the bigger 170 gr. ball might penetrate a tad better. But either way, there's not going to be a significant amount of difference between the two. Pick a load that groups and go huntin'!!

LifeNRA
The 150 grain Federals shot the best out of mine. But you need to see which shoots better. Try different brands as was mentioned above.
johnf
Shoot whatever groups the best the deer isn't going to know the difference. I've shot 150 and 170 gr. Winchester Super X, Remington Corelokd, and the cheap federal blue box stuff. My marlin likes the 150 of all brands about the same. 170's don't seem to group as well. snapper
My .30-30 lever guns like Federal 125 gr. Hi-Shok Hollow points. Shoot great and kill deer...but I agree, you need to shoot different brands to see what your gun likes.
RangerClay
I shot Federal 170 gr. Nosler partition bullets for years. Now I am shooting the new LeveRevolution bullets by Hornady. They are made just for Marlins. They are an awesome bullet. I killed my first deer with one with these bullets last year and it dropped in it's tracks. bwlacy
I've been shooting the 170 grain round nose corelokt for about 25 years now in my 30-30. Haven't ever tried anything else. It shoots a good enough group to kill any deer within it's range. I have killed every deer I've ever shot at with that rifle, and usually they don't go very far. If you take a high shoulder shot at the range you are going to be hunting they will drop right there. Find some cheap ammo that will group in your rifle. Take the money you save and get a good quality low power scope. Then your ready to go. Matt
njbowhntr
I have yet to shoot a deer with them, but the Hornady's are for me. I have had excellent results with them at the range out to 200 yards.
