Bucks are losing Velvet here

Is that normal this time of the year Steve? Seems kind of early.

Our season opens for bow, the last week in august, and you'd be hard pressed to find a buck still in velvet, but it does happen sometimes.

I think it is a week early or so, but pretty much on schedule for around here.

It definitely depends on area as to when.

Here the bucks are completely out of velvet by the end of Aug. Our season opens Aug 15th and if you don't get one before the end of Aug. your chances of getting one in velvet are really zero.

These deer also start dropping horns last week in December and by the end of January all have shed.

WOW...I've never seen bucks in hard horn here before mid August. It's usually around early September here for most of the older bucks. There are some older bucks that are still in velvet come October 1st here but it's rare. It's pretty common here to see young bucks in velvet in late Setember and into the 1st week of October.
