i agree that was pure stupidity, what about calling animal control wouldnt that have been a better way to handle this situation, and why o why would you fire your pistol up into a tree at a snake that is so stupid, i think there are many of ways this tragic accident could have been prevented, this guy should not be on paid leave for no he should be suspended until the investigation, just complete stupidity on the officers judgement i think, thoughts and prayers go out to the childs family

Not going to withhold my thoughts Andrea. That cop is negligent and should be dealt with. Very sad story and no excuse for that happening. Couple things that should have made for this to never happen. Know your target and what is beyond. Do not fire at water is also one of the things they emphasize in hunter safety, seems law enforcement should also know to follow these rules too. A very ignorant accident that should have never happened.

I just can't imagine what I would do in this situation. That police officer better stay in hiding that's for sure. I'm wanting to say a lot more but it's not appropriate for this site. Just REALLY REALLY makes me mad to read stuff like this.:mad::mad:

Sometimes I wonder why I bother reading the news or watching it on tv anymore. Nothing but bad news, day in and day out.

Kind of on the flipside of this story Andrea, a kid was killed by a cop here not too long back in the Memphis area, was big news here, but probably never made it far in the national news. The kids was holding a toy gun and supposedly pointed it at the cop. To make a sad situation worse, because the race of the kid, Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson and the rainbow push coalition got involved, and am pretty sure they were pushing for manslaughter charges against that cop.

That is absolutely ridiculous. They should be charged with murder is you ask me. I tell ya what, I don't have a problem with some cops, but some of them let having the authority get to their head. It absolutely drives me nuts to see a cop sitting in their cruiser and clocking innocent citizens with their speed gun. Give me a break......as if the state doesn't take enough out of my pay check to begin with, they think they need to get them a little more. We have robbers, murderers, rapist, drug dealers, and child molestors on the loose and thats all they have better to do is shoot at snakes and sit on the shoulder of the road clocking cars?? How ridiculous. The cop that is out there to catch the bad guy is the cop I want in my town. I'm sorry if I offended anybody (swampy) but thats just my opinion.

I thought police were supposed to "Serve and Protect". For some reason, I never feel safe with cops around. To many idiots out there with badges! This is a truly sad bit of news and the police officers should be held accountable to the fullest extent...no expections, no excuses. Hunting 101 teaches you to see beyond the target you are shooting at. Chances are the snake wasn't harming anyone or anything either to begin with. Complete idiots!

I think some of you guys are being a little tough on police officers as a whole. I think they are there to serve the community and help make it a better place.

Yes, not all officers deserve their authority but, I would bet most officers do and are great people that are there to help you to the best of their ability.

No one likes to get a speeding ticket but, could you imagine what it would be like on the highways without police officers there to enforce the laws? People die daily on the highways because of reckless driving, DUI and speeding. It would only increase if officers did not enforce traffic laws.

Officers are normal people like me and you but, they have to see and deal with some horrible things that only you and I can imagine. They have to risk there lives to keep us safe. Give them some respect.

Nick, maybe they enforce speed laws because that is their job. Despite what you think traffic collisions caused by people speeding kill a lot more people every year than the other crimes you named.

"I'm not saying the cop shot him on purpose," Tracy said. "It was an accident. But let me tell you — if I had a kid and put him in this car and didn't put him in a car seat and he got killed on the way to town, they'd charge me with murder ... and what this cop did is a lot worse than that."

I agree there should be stout penalties for this officer, but we'll see what actually happens with the case...

I'm not a big fan of cops either. Here about 7 years ago, a bunch of cops went to a man's house who is the town drunk, they started to harrass the man in his house, the man threw them out and told them to stay off the property. The man was also a little tipsey at the time and he started to shoot in the air to scare the cops off. The cops decided to fire back and they had to call for backup. Two different counties came to the rescue, but the truth was told in court about what went down. I'm not a big fan of cops either. I know a few that is cool as heck, but most of them that I know are told idiots. Some in my town are criminals themselves, but thats a whole new ball game. I respect what real cops do, catch the bad guys, but some don't deserve respect. This cop in this story doesn't derserve a dang thing.

The city of Noble recently lost thier Animal Control officer due to budget issues. And with an already underfunded and undermanned Police force, this is really going to take its toll on the city. I live in Norman which is only about 5 miles north of where this happened, but I do own a business in Noble. Just talking with a few folks this morning, and as you can imagine this little community is pretty shaken up. In the paper this morning there was a story about the boy. Sounds like he was a great kid and really knew his Bible! It said that he has always the first to memorize versus each week at Church, and how a lot of people thought he was destined to be a preacher. The story ended by saying that he's now fishing in Heaven, and I believe it. Such a senseless act that should of never happened.

Just a footnote to this!

NEVER aim or fire any weapon above or at the skyline!

What jerks!

That is exactly what I was thinking!

Why in the HECK didn't he just use a shotgun!!!
