Re: any luck icefishin yet??

I didn't think there was enough ice to start fishing around here, but saw 4 shacks out on a local pond yesterday, so it must be a little thicker than I thought. I will be waiting another week before I go out, but my other half went with friends this morning so will have to wait and see if they get anything good! (Maybe I will have him drill a few holes close to shore for me this afternoon!LOL)

Re: any luck icefishin yet??

Went out yesterday, and today, with very limited success. Yesterday, got about 15 bluegills, and only 2 keepers in the bunch. No tipup flags.

Today, only got a handfull of small gills, but did manage to catch a 20" fat female largemouth. I had to kill her, as the treble hook was in the middle of her throat, and had her throat hooked shut completely. That's too bad, as she was a nice looking fish, but I also know alot of hungry people who need the fish right now. So, it all works out.

My question is(I didn't have a fish scale), what she weighed. I'm guessing between 4 and 4 1/2 pounds.

Any other guesses?

Re: any luck icefishin yet??

I went ice fishing yesterday with my fiance. There is a hole that he always uses, and although he always gets a flag, it is right on shore so there are lots of fallen logs and junk that the fish tangles up in and gets away. I told him he was wasting his time and should move it. About an hour later the flag goes up and I start teasing him that he has caught another stick. He starts pulling in the line and said it felt big, so I told him logs drag pretty hard! LOL Sure enough a stick about a foot and a half long by 5 inches around pops up from the hole. I start laughing as he is untangling the log (spitting and sputtering the whole time). I happened to look down the hole when I see a big belly roll along the side of the hole. I said "Honey, you still got something good on there!" He ended up with a really fat 3.5 lb. brook trout!! LOL We think the log must have worn out the fish before we got to it....we will be buying more of that leader though, pretty good stuff if you can pull up a 6 pound stick with a 3.5 lb. fish at the end. I did end up getting a flag, but it just had a stick, no fish. frown.gif

That is cool, nothing like a nice fat brookie through the ice. I have a spot like that too, it is an old beaver house and there are sticks in the water in front of it for about a 25 foot circle. I always catch a lot of fish, but anything over 14"usually muscles into the sticks and breaks me off.
