wtnhunt
Anyone here know much about appliance repair? Got an old kenmore frost free upright 19 cubic foot freezer that has been down in my barn for at least 12 years. Supposedly the only problem with it when it quit working was the starting capacitor for the compressor. The capacitor is missing and looking at the schematics, best as I can tell it looks like everything else is there. Really is hard to tell for sure as there is mud from dirt dawbers caked around the lines and the wiring near the compressor. The freezer had been out of the weather in the barn most of that time, but has been somewhat exposed to the elements for about the last year or so. I found the part number for capacitor at sears and it is only like $9. Think it is only 3 wires, all I saw loose anyways. The question really is with as long as the freezer has been sitting, what are the chances it still has a charge(freon) and still will run? Planning to have a fairly large angus steer processed soon and really needing the extra freezer space with the stuff from the garden filling most of our other freezers. If this freezer would run and cost a minimal amount to fix, it would be great. Assuming that there are not any leaks in the lines, any thoughts? wtnhunt
Anyone? Surely there are some appliance repair people on here.
popgun
I don't know much about the repair of old freezers, but there must be a good reason it ended up out in the shed years ago. I personally wouldn't trust it. In the heat of the summer it would only take one small problem to loose your meat and veggies you would have stored in there. A new freezer is cheaper than the steer you were planning to put in it. ....popgun
preacherman
would probably have to agree with Popgun on this one. I would probably just look at going and getting another freezer..........they are reasonably priced. Don't think I would trust one that has been sitting up for several years. BowtechTurkeyHunter
The charge isn't the problem ... I used to work on appliances ... its a "sealed" system so unless there was a leak prior its still has its charge ... the fact that the capacitor is missing or bad would tell me that maybe there is a problem with the compressor ... the life expectancy of a freezer compressor (and this is an average I know there will be exceptions) is about 10 to 12 years if you have it in a controlled environment ... you have 2 strikes against you the way I see it ... for what a freezer cost I would deffinately go and buy a new one or check my local appliance store for possibly a good used one ... in my opinion freezers shouldn't be purchased used cause you have to much riding on them working ... namely hundreds of dollars in food and product ... basically I wouldn't trust it its just not worth it Steve
wtnhunt
OK, thanks for the advice. Guess we will look at other options.
TCO
I would look into getting a Fridgidaire freezer. Fridgidaire makes pretty good products for a reasonable price. When it comes to freezers, Fridgidaire is pretty much all we sell where I work.

William if you are going to get a new freezer make sure you get one with a complete warranty ... meaning sealed system and everything ... and dont get a frost free freezer ... the reason is a frost free has to run heaters to get rid of the frost thus lowering the temp in your freezer and lowering the temp of your meat too ... it is more likely to cause problems later on down the road ... my freezer that I have doesnt hardly get any frost in it unless the kids leave the door open lol ... just something else to think about.. and they are cheaper Steve

Are you looking at getting an upright or chest freezer? One thing I like about chest freezers is its pretty hard to leave the door open on. The door has been left open a couple times on our upright and it ruined quite a bit of stuff
wtnhunt
Are you looking at getting an upright or chest freezer? Actually we currently have and are running one of each, this other freezer would have been a third freezer and would have just made it a little easier to manage. Our chest freezer is in the garage and is a 23 cu ft model. The upright is in the house, an 11.7 cu ft model, both are kenmore and neither is frost free. Think we will do some major re arranging, give some veggies away to family and might be able to make just enough room if we sell off part of the meat, got a couple weeks to a month to figure it all out. Not really looking to buy another freezer right now. Thanks again for the suggestions.
