Sam16
It has been my hunting strategy the past few years to hunt the small field edges in the evening, and the wooded bedding areas in the morning. Makes sense right? Well this year we have a 3 small food plots. Usually i wouldnt think of hunting them in the morning, but i've been watching a lot of hunting videos where they are killing big bucks in fields in the morning. Do you guys do that and do you have deer sneak into the fields in the morning hours getting a quick snack before bedding up for a day or what? Just curious what everyone's strategy is. Guest Hunter36
I've never really had good luck until later in the year on field edges in the morning. The fields I normally hunt are 10acres or bigger so that may be the main reason. But, like I said later in the year (around the rut) I've had many bucks come by even in big open fields at all times of the day. If your hunting a small plot inside cover but not exactly in their bedroom I think it should be productive. The deer may use it as sort of a staging area before they bed up for the day. buckee
I've noticed when the frost hits, that the deer will come out for a late morning snack, on the sunny side of the field, after the sun has burned the frost off, around 10 or 11 o'clock sometimes. I think the cold hurts their teeth, like mine sometimes...LOL
okbowman
If they are small foodplots near the bedding areas, they should be productive in the mornings. That's provided that you can get in there without bumping them on your way in. Good luck!
wtnhunt
Depending on what is going on I will hunt field edges in the mornings, especially with the rifle where I can cover a good sized field. Have killed quite a few deer in the mornings either in the field or on the edges.
Tominator
I firmly believe there's only one thing that's predictable about a deer, and that is they are unpredictable. Having said that, I've seen them linger in a field feeding in the morning on occasion, but for the most part if they're in a field, they're usually on a mission and heading for cover. I agree, they are unpredictable! I've seem some nice bucks lingering around in the morning in all stages of the season. GOOD LUCK!
Tetro
Most of our stands wtach fields and fields edges. In the mornings we have have doggers coming through the bush to bring the deer out. In the eveing we watch the same fields sometimes, but most of us have spots picked out to watch the edges of different fields tyo catch them coming out to feed. gitcha_some
Honestly i dont think any of it has to do with what time of the day it is, first off, during the rut, anything is possible when it comes to bucks, but in my area i do usually see bucks in the mornings or extreme evenings during the rut. I believe strongly in going by the moon, i always see more deer when its peak hours, and less deer when its at its lowest activity mark

Do you guys do that and do you have deer sneak into the fields in the morning hours getting a quick snack before bedding up for a day or what? Just curious what everyone's strategy is. Hunting fields in the morning is GREAT during 2 times of the year. On opening week. I love hunting a soybean field in the mornings. I've seen nice bucks munching away in the middle of bean fields as the sun comes up. They don't stay there very long but long enough to give you a great shot at one. Since there hasn't been any hunting pressure they'll hang around in bean fields early morning. After about the first week of gun season hunting fields in the morning becomes difficult, espcially if its a low lying food plot like clover, soybeans are a little different because they offer more cover. 2nd is the rut. The 2 biggest deer I've ever seen while hunting were openly walking in fields early in the morning. One was a big 10 that was about 400 yards away walking through a cut corn field about 7:30 am following a doe. The second was a big 8 standing with 2 does in a soybean field during the rut. That also was about 8 am. I couldn't get a shot at the deer in the soybeans because they were so high I couldn't get a clear shot at about 250 yards away but he had a huge rack. Yes hunting fields in the mornings does work!

I dont think I have ever hunted a field in the morning in archery, but I would think during the rut it might not be a bad idea. I have seen some BIG bucks over the years cruising open fields during the rut on my way to school or work.
Guest titleist_03
I hate hunting field edges in the morning. One of the properties I hunt is a small area of timber surround on three sides by fields. I will normally hunt opening morning, then not again until November. Like FSU said, I have found only 2 productive times to hunt field edges in the morning. I find that I bump entirely too many deer hunting edges in the morning through October. I like to sneak in the backside of the woods and get between the bedding area and where they are feeding in the morning.
Dogg6
I have better luck hunting large fields in the morning. The smaller fields do not produce much activity in the a.m. early in the season.
