only steel shot that ever cycled through my 870 was winchester drylok and winchester supremes in dueces for ducks and BB for geese but last season the budget got tight so starting shooting winchester xperts and i absolutely love em, if i could afford it i would only shoot winchester supremes but a little to expensive

I started duckhunting back before the lead-ban. So I have shot quite a few ducks with that stuff.

Steel has been an enormous disappointment for me. It works and I've used it for years but IMHO it's always been a poor compromise.

Federal's High Density stuff really really stones ducks. Expensive yes, but it absolutely is worth having a least one box in the blind with you ;) For me the stuff patterns out of a modified choke like it's a full choke.

I'm in the same boat as you Leo. Steel SUCKS!!!! I hate the stuff. I do not use it at all for geese but use Kent #2's for ducks. We do a lot of jump shooting and when we switched to Fed Tungsten loads years ago we noticed that we were still spending the same on ammo because so many geese would take a good hit with steel but keep flying. I have also used uite a bit of Bismuth for geese.

BOY! It's good to hear from someone who actually KNOWS how raw a deal waterfowlers got with steel!

The Fed Tungsten-iron is their High Density stuff now and IMO it's the closest thing to lead ever. Honestly, I've had way better results with it than Remingtons "Hevi-Shot". I've shot both side by side. The Federal stuff really seems to rule. This is not a bash on Remingtons stuff, just a frank and honest observation.

Your accessment you spend less shots following up on wounded birds with Tungsten-Iron it is absolutely correct in my experience as well.

Leo I know your a Browning shooter and steel shot is the reason I am. When lead was outlawed my dad and I wanted 3 1/2 inchers and there were only two makers back then. Browning and Mossy. He bought a Mossy, I bought a Browning. He sold the Mossy soon after.

We used to knock the heck out of geese with 4 buck and the ducks with copper plated BB when jump shooting. That stuff was lethal. Saying we got a raw deal is a serious understatement, I just hate steel.

Yep I bought my Browning BPS 3 1/2 in 1990 for the same reason. That was the first year Browning offered the gun. And the 3 1/2"s really did help the effectiveness of steel. (I'd rather hunt than chase cripples) 17yrs later that gun is still going strong.
