Anyone hunt gators w/bow??????????

Recommended Posts

I am going on a Gator hunt to louisiana the first week of Sept........I plan on using a Muzzy Gator Getter kit but I do not want to use a bangstick or any type of firearm to finish off the lizard. I figured I would use a sturdy cut on contact BH on a heavy carbon shaft and try to immobilize it by hitting the spine..........then severing the spinal cord with a knife once it was immobilized............Does anyone have any suggestions or pointers for me???????

Don't worry. I can always change your user name to Stumpy, so you don't lose your post count :D

Sure sounds like an interesting hunt.

Better be careful comin in here asking that, there's some of us that might get offended!!!!!!!!!:D

Ok,I'll rephrase ...............Has anyone hunted Alligators with a bow??:D

I hope to have some good footage to post in a month or so.......sounds like we will have at least two if not three cameras rolling,so at least one of them should capture all the action.

A lot of people hunt them with bows here in Georgia. Bows, spears, a big treble hook on the end of a stout fishing pole, etc. But.........they all finish them off with a pistol or a bang stick. It would take a lot of effort and/or a perfectly placed shot to kill one with a bow. I've never heard of one being killed that way. I'm sure it's happened, though.

All I'm gonna say is, once you have him stuck, he's gonna be mad and you'll want to dispatch him as quick as possible or there will be injuries, either to you or to the gator.

Ive hunted them and heers my story on not using a gun. We went to fill the tag and i made a perfect shot. we hooked the bobber to it and let it run till it died. We waited and waited till we where sure it was dead we hauled him in the boat and taped its mouth for safty reasons. Well about 15min later after getting everyhting it was time for pics and that thing came alive. I never wanted to shoot holes in my boat that bad. We broke the paddle and it finally died. The tail did tons of damage also on the ol flat bottom. Heers a pic of a biggun. Thats my buddy on it

I had every intention of spot and stalk and killing them either from the boat or shore with my Mathews........well after seeing how thick the Duck seed was on the waters surface and the fact that gators in La rarely let themselves be seen on the shore, we elected to run bait lines that we baited with chicken quaters let to sit in the sun for a few days to ripen! We also chummed the water around the bait with blood from rotten duck breast.........out of 5 bait lines we had 4 gators on in less than 24 hours.

My buddy Steve aquired a new nickname: "Master Gator Baiter"! icon_lol.gif

We had only 2 tags ,so two were catch and release icon_smile.gif .......got some awesome footage and meat and a great trophy for da wall!

I hear it's pretty fun, I don't do it but have a friend that does. I hear that a possible new Texas state record was caught over in Trinity County, it was 13 ft. and some odd inches. BIG!!! Took a truck and a real heavy duty chain to pull the joker out of the water. It weighed 880 lbs. I'll watch were I go swimmin now!!:D
