Looking to buy a muzzelloader, any suggestions?

I'm in the process of buying a muzzelloader and dont really know a darn thing about them. I know the Thompson Center name is pretty good and I've seen them used on the RT videos. I was looking at maybe an Encore, or the Omega. Can anyone give me some hint to help my choice, or possibly chime in on what you use and why you like it? Also if you can list price ranges that would be sweet as well.

Well i really love the omega i have, but whatever fits you best. Cleaning is very easy and the accuracy is amazing. Well theres alot of muzzle loaders out there but if the omega or encore are in your price range you wont be sorry.

Hi

I bought a Knight about 7-8 years ago. At that time Knight was the leader in the industry. I like my Knight, however, I would seriously consider other brands TODAY.

Stainless steel as Stan suggested. A lot easier to clean and maintain.

Plastic stock. No need for wood as it just gets scrathed.

Mine has a "thumbhole grip" and I love it. I would seriously consider handling one of this type to see how it feels.

I would, these days, consider a muzzleloader that has "interchangable" barrels. My old Knight only has one barrel, therefore, is only good for one week of the year. I believe that the "ENCORE" line has these options.

Last, I have seen the muzzleloaders that "break" and then lock with the primer concealed. I really like that idea of keeping the prime safe and dry. No special capper needed to prime your gun.

Make sure the breach plug comes out so that you can clean it from both ends. I believe that all new muzzleloaders are like this.

good luck

the dog.

I have to put in a plug for the Encore here. I love my Encore. I just got a slug barrel for it, and it will be the only gun I hunt with next year. I love the feel of the gun, though it is a bit heavy. When I ordered the Encore, I handled an Omega, and handed it back to the shop owner, and told him to order me an Encore. They are 2 totally different guns feel wise. But, you might prefer the Omega, and from everything I hear it is an awesome gun. I just don't have anything bad to say about my Encore. grin.gif

Thanks for the replies so far. I just got back from the sporting goods shop and handled an omega with the camo stock and stainless steel barrel, very sweet and on sale for 420$. I also handled an encore and like that too. Was a little heavier and I like the idea of being able to switch barrels. That gun however was a little more pricey. Does the omega for that price sound like a good deal? I might have to go back and get that, then learn what other supplies I might need. I'll check out the muzzelloader forum, I never knew it was there. Thanks again

Have an encore and am considering an omega. Only difference is the stock or length of pull. The encore fits me much better than an omega. If and when I do purchase the omega, it will have the stock chopped by my local gunsmith.

Our Sportsman's Warehouse has the stainless flutted barrel omega with the bland black stock for $389. Might have to live with the black synthetic stock at that price!

Why? The Omega is a fine fun-- but, no Encore.

Stainless Encore or Omega. I have both and have researched them extensivey. Personally I think T/C or Knight but I like the T/C's better, easier to maintain and clean and both shoot 1" groups all day, all year in all climates
