Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

I have a 20 Gauge, 3 inch, Remington 870LW special. It has the straight stock. I'm looking for a slug barrel for this gun. Looking at the Cabelas catalog, they list a fully rifled 20 gauge barrel.

There is a notation that reads:

870 special Field barrels, and other 870 barrels are not interchangeable. The 20 gauge light weight barrels will not fit 20 gauge standard guns.

Does this mean that the 20 gauge slug barrel that Remington offers, will not fit this gun? If thats the case, does anyone make a slug barrel for this gun?

I am asking because my wife is showing an interest in deer hunting, and I think this would make a great slug gun for her.

Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

What exactly is a Lightweight special? And a straight stock? I can't find anything about it on remingtons website. The only LW 870's are .410 and 28 gauge.

I do have a Rem 870 wingmaster 20 gauge Light Contour (LC), is this what your talkin about? If so, the barrel you are looking at should fit.

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

The gun has 870 LW Special stamped on the reciever. The straight stock, means it is a staight line from the recoild pad to the reciever. It isn't a pistol grip. I believe the gun was called an upland special. It has dual beads on the vent rib. I bought this gun in the mid 80's.

This pic shows the straight stock I'm talking about

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

Remington made the Special Field 870 and 1100 from 1984 to 1995. Your understanding is correct. The slug barrel will not fit the SF. f I remember correctly the ring that goes on the magazine tube is in a different position on the SF model.

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

The deal with this is that Remington has a standard weight 20 ga and the light weight 20 ga They stopped making the standard weight 20 ga along time ago and it has a larger mag tube on it. My dad ran into the same problem getting a slug barrel for his 20 guage 870 because his is a standard weight and almost all slug barrels now are for the LT models. So that Barrel will fit your gun If you have anymore questions about this feel free to PM me

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

Sorry Todd, you are incorrect. The Special Field used a shorter magazine tube so the ring is in a different place. Here is the quote from Remington:

"There are no barrels other than the 23" Rem Choke Vent rib Special Field barrels available for the Model 870 Special Field. The Special Field shotgun has a shorter magazine tube than the standard 870. This being the case, the barrel guide ring is brazed to the barrel closer to the chamber. The guide ring on standard barrels won't reach the magazine tube because of its shorter length."

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

Todd is correct for a standard sized vs lt20 versions of the 20 ga 870. What he did not pick up on is that your gun is a Special Field model that uses its own sized barrels. Unfortunately, it is the red headed step child in the 870 world.

Re: Remington 20 Gauge LW slug barrel

Ive shot the 1100 version of this gun and they are pretty sweet shooters for uplands, i wouldnt mind finding a 870 still around as i think it would make a sweet little pump. Can you just shoot rifled slugs through it?? Id guess that because of the weight of the gun it would probobly kick like a mule.
