Scent free??

What is the absolute best way to be scent free during archery/ml season, in your opinion. A scent lock suit or carbon activated or what?? The reason is I found some huge rubs on trees today while post season scouting and from the looks of this area, it is being used a lot by some decent sized bucks. The only problem is I can't really hunt downwind of it (due to deep water) , but more off to one side. I want to get in near there, but don't want my scent to spook them. I plan on staying about 40-50 yards away and hunting the edges of this staging area.

Re: Scent free??

While I don't think Scent-Lok, or similar clothing is a cure-all, I do believe it helps. I think keeping all your clothing, release, face mask, boots , backpack/fannypack etc in plastic containers, with scent wafers, and not putting on your hunting clothes untill you are at your hunting area, you will have a decent chance. I do those things, plus spray myself, and my equiptment with scent eliminator after I'm dressed.

Re: Scent free??

It's not possible to be completely scent free. In addition to the things Tedicast suggested you need to bath in scent free soaps and use scent free deodorants.

Playing the wind should be a top priority. If it's not possible you have to be super picky and very choosy about what days you hunt that stand. If the bucks are big then they are also wise ans won't put up with any noticable intrusion.

It only takes one slip up to turna big boy nocturnal.

Scent Blocker Plus - FORGET THE WIND, JUST HUNT!

I will go through my little ritual. I have been pretty lucky with deer getting close to me. I am embarrassed to admit it - but I do not play the wind at all usually. Just pick a spot I want to go to and hunt there. Up until this year I have always had deer close to me!

Starting Oct. 1 (when the season started on the 15th) I would shower with Scent Sheild soap and shampoo daily. Also now start using SS (Scent Shield) deoderant. No perfume, cologne, etc from here on out!

(next year I will be using Knight and Hale's "Dirt Soap" - makes you stink like fresh earth! Awesome!!!!)

Shave head bald, no facial hair.

Keep ALL hunting clothes and items carried in plastic bins year round, with HS Scent Wafers, (fresh earth and/or acorn)

Keep bow in bow case with same HS Scent Wafers (really makes bow smell like earth!)

Just before the season, wash ALL hunting clothes AND any clothes I will wear to the woods in the car (usually sweats and a sweatshirt) in SS soap. Wash Scent Blocker suit in carbon wash - dry to reactivate)

As long as no neighbors are doing anything that would get stink on my freshly washed clothes, I will hang them up, inside out, and spray them with Carbon Blast or Scent Shield Fall Blend. All armpit and crotch areas get heavy doses of Carbon Blast!

Once they are dry, they get packed in the scent free plastic bins.

Come hunting season, I wear the "travel clothes" to and fro, shower daily, change in the woods, respray with Scent Shield Fall Blend, and wear rubber boots. I do not touch any trees or foliage on the way in. I always wear light cotton camo gloves, no matter how hot.

I tuck my pants into my boots on the way to the stand, put untuck them upon arrival.

Seems like a lot, but not so once you get doing it. The worst part is changing in the woods when it is really cold!

Re: Scent free??

This was my first year hunting WhiteTails with a bow. I made a lot of mistakes but I aint to old to learn..

what I learned is that you definately need to do as much as possible to mask human odor and it never hurts to have more than one stand hung in your favorite plot that way you can always play the wind in your favor, I am a cheap scate so I use a Military MOP suit that you can buy on ebay and a lot of cover scents and odor eliminating personal hygene products. I think the biggest thing is paying attention to what is going on around you and tweaking your attack to fit the situation.... Did I mention that I took my deer this year at seven yards and that he stood directly below me for about a minute... Good camo and scent control are a must

Re: Scent free??

How much money do you want to spend? The Indaians used to coat their bodies with grease to mask the odor, scent blocker and scent lock all have great products, and realy cool camo patterns. It boils down to what are you willing to spend on scent control? And don't forget your head gear, lets face it no matter how many times a day you brush your breath don't smell like apples to deer. You will never be able to "forget the wind" it's not possible. You can how ever take a deers mind off of things a little. ie. If you have any wild app;e orchards in your area you could buy a large bottle of Motts apple Juice and pour it on the ground about ten to twenty yds from your stand that way any deer in the area will be looking for a treat and if they catch a slight whiff of you they are less likely to blow out

I already use all the scent free soaps, deodorants and sportswashes

Me too Ken. Have had many times without any scent lok or other fancy suits that I have had deer down wind to never know I was there.

For me keeping my clothes in plastic totes with cedar limbs really seems to help with fooling the deers noses. It might not be the best scent control methods, but I honestly think that even with the most expensive scent suits out there there will still always be the chance of a deer picking up your scent.

If you want to get the scent lok or other types suit, check your wal marts for the clearance stuff. They had quite a bit of stuff they were staring to mark down when I was in our wal mart just this morning.
