PA Mtn. Lion

Recommended Posts

Talked to a neighbor the other day and he said that while on his way home from the shooting range a mountain lion crossed the road and jumped up on the other bank which is above the car and stood there looking at him for almost ten seconds before running. Whoever says mountain lions arent in Pa are foolish and ignorent. There here!

Everytime I see a post, story, or hear a story about this subject...its always, "my brothers father-in-laws step sons nephew seen a mt. lion". Never any pictures or video or any kind of proof...heck would maybe believe a picture of a paw print or something. I rank them with UFO's, ghost and such...believe its posible, but until I see one for myself...I guess I'll be foolish and ignorant!

Whether or not they could be there, I dont know. Sure seems like there could be a possibility. Have heard numerous stories of big cats around here. Not to say it is not possible, but until I either see one for myself or get a pic of one, I still will continue to call them stories.

To this day the state of Kansas does not acknowledge the presence of Mt. Lions. I saw one in SE Kansas several years ago. I don't have pictures or any other proof. I also know, whether anyone believes me or not I don't care, they are their. I know what I saw. Those of you that haven't seen them or need proof I understand your skepticism, many people see a large bobcat and automatically say Mt. Lion. I don't know if they are in PA or not, but it would not surprise if they are. I have lived in several states (Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Michigan). In Iowa there was a big debate about their presence as well and then in one winter, one was killed on the highway, one was photographed on a trail cam, and another was killed by a hunter. All in different parts of the state. My point is this, just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they aren't there either.

1. Is the Mt. Lion a popular pet choice out there in PA? LOL

2. If a male and female pet escaped could it be possible that they bred in the wild? LOL

3. Is it legal to shoot a Mt. Lion in your state? (Are there even any regulations in place?)

I'm not an expert, don't know much about the Northeast part of the country, but Mt. Lions are becoming more and more prominent and seem to be moving east as their populations grow.

I ran into this issue (question 3) in Kansas they told me when I asked that their simply were not any in the state. They would not give me an answer on the legality of killing one because they simply did not exist.

They're in E.Tn. and S.W.Va. also..I've seen tracks on the Clinch and some trail camera pictures from around the High Knob..They just won't admit it....The Roswell of the F&G depts of the east....................

For that very reason this state(Tennessee) changed their rules on non regulated game so that any non regulated game in the state is not legal. Some state wildlife officials still seem to quickly deny the possibility of the existence of critters that they think are not around an area. Personally I try to keep an open mind and realize that some animals do have the ability to cover a large area and that they can migrate. Few years ago there was a story I think of two or three elk killed in either northern Mississippi or Alabama that supposedly either made their way from east Tennessee or from Kentucky. Any way you look at it those elk covered a good bit of territory. Would think cats could cover ground a little easier and with less notice than elk.

I'm with ya here snap... I used to get on the bandwagon but anymore its just a waste of time because there is never any proof. I believe, without a doubt, they could live here. I also am sure a few have been released from captivity over the years. BUT I need proof or its just a rumor because thats what experience has led me to believe.

I tend to believe there might be a few running around in PA. I mean when you look at all the wilderness and terrain around here especially in central PA, and knowing they once roamed everywhere around this state it seems a little strange that people just completely write them off.

With that said, I'll really believe it when I see it. Like some of the others have said, I have heard millions of stories about somebody or somebody's uncles aunts cousins brother seeing a mountain lion and there is never a picture or proof.

I mean people living around PA know that getting just a simple picture of a mountain lion on film from a camera or trailcam would be like hitting the lottery around here.....yet no one ever has one to go along with these stories.

You'd think in this day in age of digital cameras, camera phones, trailcams etc....somebody would have a picture by now if these stories were true.

Kinda what I was thinking. But..............

Several years back, there was a large (bigger than bobcat) cat running around this area. It was not a rumor or story. My wife's uncle (and a lifetime friend of mine) saw a fresh wet track on a dry blacktop driveway. The man hunts elk every year in the Selways. He knows what a cat track looks like. In the same time frame and 1/2 mile away, my own mother saw "something very large and cat-like" in a hayfield with her own eyes as she was driving a back road. Where'd it come from?? Escaped captivity, I'm certain. Where'd it go?? No idea. It was seen regularly in that general location for a good many months then it basically vanished.

You wouldn't be allowed to shoot one if you were to see one anyway. The Eastern Cougar is on the endangered species list and killing one would earn you a one way ticket to Federal Prison and a hefty fine. So if they did exist, the DNR would have to confirm it and until it's confirmed, it's just a myth. They used to live here, but haven't been here in a really long time. This doesn't mean that they can't make a comeback, but until there is a stable population ( if there even is one ) and sighting numbers increase, it's still BS.

  • 2 weeks later...

A few summers back I saw a couple of kittens (cougar) just north of where I live as we were driving by a soybean field. They looked like they were pro'ly 5-6months old and 30-50 pounds and were covered head to toe in brown spots. I called SDGFP the next morning and told them. All I got was a "Yeah...sure...ok son...if you say so...uhhuh...yep...sure son, we'll check it out...yep..." Boy I'll tell ya, that got my blood boiling. Anyways, they did check it out and they confirmed it with two sets of tracks. They've definitely expanded out of the Hills and across the river into far southeastern SD and have even set up a breeding poulation as well.

Yes, there's cougars in PA. People don't question if there's lions in CA/CO/MT/ID...etc....but how many residents of those western states have actually seen them unless they specially hunt for the cats? How many have ever seen a roadkilled Mt. Lion because there should certainly be several in CA each year with the huge population of big cats? I'll keep an open mind on the subject of em being here in PA.
