98chevy
I just dont understand it. I trained my last lab that was a great dog and only wanted to retrieve and please me. Well it was stolen out of my pen. It had the chip but nothing ever came out. So i got a girl actully 2 and gave one to my sister. I cant get this dog to do anything. She is almost 2 years. Ive tried her from day one she just doesnt enjoy it. she may get the dummy 2 or 3 times then loose intrest. She likes splashing in the water but when she swims she just kicks her front feet above the water its funny to watch. Any suggestions though?? I cant figure it out. As for her sister shes a,azing retriever but since shhe live 2 hours from me I cant train her and use her.
preacherman
have you tried force breaking her? I had a dog that did and acted the same way...........I then force broke her and she was the perfect lady. She would retrieve and bring everything straight back to me. 98chevy
How do i force train her?
dogdoc
I don't know if forcing will help. The dog still has to have a retrieving desire--no way to force that. Force fetching will help clean up sloppy fetching but if the dog doesn't have a retrieving desire it's time to find a new dog.

dogdoc
Here is a link to some great tips on training a retriever--there are books out there that cover training in much more detail such as SmartFetch and Smartwork. Tips 1 and 2 go over force fetching! http://www.dobbsdogs.com/library/retrievers/index.html
BowtechTurkeyHunter
If she has the desire then get her force fetched ... way worth the time to get that done ... might have a trainer do it since she is 2 years old now ... sometime the trainer can help you with your dogs problem just because he/she has seen it so many times before ... also they can draw individual talents out of your dog that you may not see. birdhunter39
dog won't retrieve 98 chevy my sisters new black lab almost a year has the same problem , after 2 or 3 retrieve's she's done . loves playing in the water , loud noise's don't bother her , but doesn't retrieve , she was told to try a shock collar , and that made it even worse , she quit retrieving . It took 2 months to get her to retrieve 2 or 3 times again . I said to my sister who happens to also be my huntin partner , i'll buy a hunting dog and have it trained professionly , the total cost of this is going to run me around $ 2000.00 , but i'm not running in a lake , or river or slough , for my ducks and geese , i will if i have to though . best of luck
