Benelli or Beretta

Recommended Posts

Ok I am getting a new shotgun this year ... mostly cause I can with where I work.

I have shot a lot of Benelli's and I like how light they are ... I am just not sure I like the recoil on them that much ... I also like the things that Beretta has done with the Xtrema 2 to "fix" all the problems with the 1.

I want a gun that shoots 3.5" I want camo and I want 26" barrel.

What is your guy's experience with these guns pros and cons ... both are fantastic guns ... what are some of the things you like and dislike about your gun ... even if you are being picky what would you change?

Just to let you know I am sorta leaning toward the Beretta cause of the recoil but have not pulled the trigger so to speak. It is a heavier gun but I am a bigger guy and weight really isn't an issue ... (I'll just have my wife carry it for me):D.

Anyhow any input would be great

Thanks guys

Steve

PS absolutely no brand bashing please!!!!

If recoil is your concern than the Beretta wins. I haven't shot the Beretta but I have shot the Benelli's and they do kick harder than GAS guns do. Folks I know whom I trust who have shot both guns say the Beretta is quite remarkable for soft recoil.

I wouldn't rule out a Winchester SX2 or Browning Gold if you are looking at new guns.

I need to add. Keep in mind that Browning has a $100 rebate going on the new Golds right now.

That means if you find a good deal on a new Gold, Browning will refund you $100. This means you can really save some money on one with some of the Pre-Season sales going on now. I've seen them as low as $750 with the rebate and that's a smoking deal on a Browning Gold!

Here's the info on the rebate.

Browning doesn't pull up right for me ... I have shot them also ... the $100 is apealing but I save that when I get the Beretta or Benelli at employee purchase 20% below wholesale.

Can someone enlighten me as to the big changes they made in the super x 2 to the super x 3 I have shouldered the x2 but not the x3 is there a big difference they sorta look like a browning gold ... imagined that lol ...

I just dont want to get a gun for the brand ... the price comes with the job so I am already ahead of that lol ... I guess maybe I need to find someone with a x3 and shoot it ... does it shoot like the browning cause I can't hit anything with a Browning.

The SX3 comes with spacers that allow you to fit the shotgun to you better.

The Browning Gold has speed loading, magazine cutoff and an oversized safety. Which honestly may not be big deal options to you.

the sx3 browning and Beretta all have the magazine cutoff I thought ... the speed loading is pretty neat ... the other thing I couldnt think of is the safety ... on the Beretta its in front of the trigger and I have never had a gun with the safety in front they have all been behind the trigger is this something that is hard to get used to?

How about cycling light loads? My buddy says his beretta will cycle 7/8 loads no problem ... but I know that some of the SBE IIs have to be "broke" in before they will cycle all shells ... any feedback on this?

Steve

I can't speak to the SBE's, I have the Montefeltro in 20 ga. I've had one hung round in 10 years with that gun. I was sitting in 10 degree weather for about 2 hours with a bolt that I had not cleaned in quite some time when that round didn't eject. I would highly recommend the Benelli, I don't think there's really a "break in" time for it, and if there is, I'll bet it's pretty fun. :D

As far as I know the Brownings are the only Shotguns with the Magazine Cutoff Lever. The SXs and Beretta's have an "Automatic Magazine Cutoff"

The reason the Brownings have the Manual Cutoff lever is speed loading will not work with "auto" cutoff. You simply can't have speed loading and "auto" cutoff on the same gun.

Loading a gun with "auto" cutoff through the ejection port can be accomplished on some guns. But it's tricky and a darn good way to either get your finger pinched really hard or jam your gun. The safest way to swap shells on an "auto" cutoff gun is to eject two shells, feed the shell you want into the magazine, close the bolt to load it and replace the one of the two you just ejected in the magazine.

With the Browning Lever. You cutoff the magazine, eject the shell, drop the new one in the ejection port, close the bolt and open the magazine again. The cutoff lever also allows you to unchamber a round and close the bolt without emptying the entire magazine (this is a crucial difference between the Browning lever and "auto" shut off). This an awfully nice feature if you're hunting rough terrain that would normally cause you to completely unload the weapon several times (ie. crossing ditches, fences etc.)

I know the Browning is out for you. If it doesn't fit you, it doesn't. And that is very important in your decision. But I did want to explain the uniqueness of the Browning cutoff system. It's a really nice feature that IMO is quite under appreciated and in general poorly understood. Honestly, I don't think it's fair other manufacturers compare their cutoff system to Brownings. They really aren't the same.

Hi Steve!

I have tried some of the Benelli shotguns, and I'm quite satisfied with them! But Beretta has a recoil that I don't even notice! I'm using a Beretta 391 Urika, and I'm happy with the shotgun! The thing about Urika is that the shotgun is in lightweight, but it's long enoug to slow you down in right and left turns when your in movement!

What I'm not so happy about, is that you have to maintain this shotgun very well if you want it to last for quite some time! But, that goes for everything don't you think?=) If the maintenance of this shotgun is well, it will never dissapoint you!=)

I'm not sure if the shotgun is delivered in camo, but I would like to think so!

I've been doing clay/trap shooting for some years now, and after all those guns I've been trying out, I would say that Beretta is much shotgun for the money!

I can't say much about the Xtrema, but Urika has almost the same qualities as the Xtrema!

Hope I made the choise easier for you Steve!=)

I see that this is an old request but for what it is worth, here goes! I have a beretta xtrema 2 with max4 camo and 26 inch barrel. I did not get the kick-off but can tell you that it is the softest shooter i have had. I also have a beretta al391 optima. I can tell you all that the optima shoots softly but my wife will also verify that the xtrema2 is even softer. When we shoot clays, I know have to use the optima so she can use the xtrema2. I have shot 1 oz. loads with not one problem.

That can be said for both but the xtrema2 shoots all loads---Quite a feat! The cleaning of the xtrema2, well......Simple! Start pulling forearms off and compare at your favorite retailer and you guys and gals decide. The non kick-off version has plenty of lop adjustment.

Beretta all the way!!!!

I would go with the xtrema2. It shoots softer and a lot less felt recoil with the kickoff if you wish to get it.

For a good clean job it is easier as you don't have to take a recoil pad off etc... to get to the spring in the stock on the benelli. The beretta has the spring on the magazine tube.

The beretta shoots lighter loads reliably and you hear a lot less problems with them then the sbe2.

Guest linebacker_91

i shoot the extrema2 and absolutely love it. id pick that gun over the sbe2. the sbe2 has high recoil. my friend has one and weighs about 350 and i watched it knock him over. he has also had a hard time with that gun.

Steve...there are 2 turkey hunters that I share the woods with each spring down here. One hunts with a Benelli (he's had it 3 or 4 years now) and the other bought an Xtrema2 before last turkey season. I've shot both now.

Now I'm looking at upgrading before this season and my choice after shooting both is the Xtrema2. If I hadn't shot that Xtrema2 last spring I wouldn't even consider a new turkey gun.

BTW, the Xtrema2 comes in AP this year. ;)

Steve...just got back from the local sporting goods store (I know the owner). As it turns out the Benelli I shot before was not the current model. Personally, I really like the feel of the Benelli over the Xtrema2 so now I'm in the same boat as you on being indecisive about which way I'll go.

For now I'm scratching my head too and came home with the Benelli video catalog to review.

Oh boy  decisions...decisions.

Whichever way I go though, I'll put the Xtech holosight on it rather than the Bushnell. I won't need the night vision version though. :D At least I made one decision today.
