Hi my name is brandi and last spring was my first year hunting, and this year is my first year dear hunting. my boyfriend is the one getting me into everything and so far ive loved every bit of it. I have yet to kill anything but i cant wait to get my first trophy. I have been scouting out the state propity by my house and i have been seeing alot of bucks, most of them smaller and younger bucks, but last week we ran into a buck that will scoring over 160 easy and he was running with a few 130s and 140s. Now i really dont care what i kill for my first deer, anything would be a trophy for me but i would love to get one of the bigger bucks. but i really dont know what to use for a weapon and i dont really know where to sit to try to get in position for these deer. my boyfriend will hunt with me most of the time, but if he is at work i will be by myself, where we hunt its right down the road from where i live. but i would greatly appriate any advice anyone can give me. thank you and good hunting

Howdy Brandi,

Welcome to the Realtree Forums and most of all a big welcome to the Outdoor Sports Community!

My one piece of advice would have to be patience. For some, it takes years before they kill their first deer. But while you are out there in the woods waiting for Mr. Big to come by, be sure to take in every sight, sound and smell for there isn't much on earth more beautiful than the woods in autumn.

I look forward to seeing the pics of your first deer.

Welcome to the forum Brandi.

As far as weapons go I have the same questions as wtnhunt. I'm not sure what state you're hunting to know what firearms are legal to use there. Some states are shotgun only. I share wtnhunt's concern about getting familiar and comfortable with whatever you choose to hunt with.

Welcom to the forums Brandi. Got to agree with the other guys. Find out what is legal and comfortable to use. If your a little girl (less than 150lbs) I would probibly go with a 243, 30-30 or some other light kicking guns. If your a big scrapping baskettball player type, I might go with a 270 or up depending what your comfortable with. If you can get ahold of a 22lr rifle I would shoot it as much as possible and work on the mechanics of shooting to make yourself as comfortable with it as possible befor you're lined up on a big boy. I say 22lr because $.03 a shot is a lot easier to practice than $1 a shot.

Give us a few more specifics and we may be able to help you more.

What kind of land are you hunting?

What state? (to know what is legal in your area)

Do you have much experience in shooting?

ect

well im hunting Indiana so we are a pistol caliber and shotgun only state. I have a .17 m2 witch i try to get out and shoot it alot but the bullets for it isnt cheap. then i have a remington 870 20g, im not real used to shooting it i have to get a new barrel for before i do. but though out the week im hunting state property, and on the weekends i head down south and hunt out private land we have permision for. my boyfriend has taught me alot but he says the only way for me to really learn is get out in the woods even if im not hunting just to get familiar with the outdoors, and to try and get other hunters opions and how they do it to try to find out the way i am going to be more comfortable with it, but thanks to everyone if anybody has anymore tips i would love to hear them thanks and good huntin

Getting out there will get you experience. The more you go the more you will learn. A lot of what does and does not work, is trial and error.

If you plan to hunt with the 20 gauge, would be looking at trying the loads you plan to hunt and seeing what works best with your gun as soon as you can and practice enough to have confidence in your ability.

Welcome to the forums and the hunting world. Have to agree with wtnhunt, the best experience and knowledge comes from being out in the woods. Time in the stand or blind is where the most is learned as far as deer movement, habits, and body language. Best of luck in your upcoming season.

Welcome to the forum.

The only advise I can give you is ....

Try to find the trail the big buck is using during daytime hours,I'm sure you already know to sit with the sun at your back and wind in your face. You should also use the moon phases to your advantage, if the night before your hunt has a full moon you may not see alot of action as the deer were able to move about at night without worry. If the moon was 1/4 or no moon at all your odds will increase greatly. Don't forget to use your cover scents and attractants.

welcome to the forum, dont pressure yourself into thinking the only trophy is something you have killed, some of my best trophys are memories of either animals i've seen, or sharing the time with good friends.

on your shotgun, get the barrel, then get familiar with it, shooting it as much as you can, the better you are with it, the better the odds of coming through when it matters ;)

Welcom to the outdoor world

Give your BF a solid hand shake from all the outdoorsmen and women out there for getting another person into the outdoors.

Sounds like you have a ton of good advise already so just get out and spend some time in the stand. Be observent, learn from the actions of every animal you encounter and you will pick up on little things that make a huge difference. Ex--if a doe is coming in and looks back in the direction she came from...chances are good that there could be more deer coming...could be a fawn or it could be one of those 160's you mentioned.

Best of luck
