smo
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? To my knowledge I can't ever recall having a complete pass through with a muzzleloader. I've never shot more than 110 grains of pyrodex either.
AJ
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? I prefer a pass through. When I used a standard ML with 150 gr Pyrodex Pellets and a 235 gr QT40 Precision Rifle sabot, I regularly had pass throughs. Shooting the Savage smokeless ML with SST or ShockWave bullets, I have had both stop on the far side of the deer. Granted both have dropped on the shot, but the higher velocity of the Savage makes the bullets more explosive.
WABS
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? Have had a number of both. The instances when the bullet does not pass through almost always occurs when the bullet has a direct hit on bone on the way in. Blood trail is better with a pass through, but I've not had any trouble following the non pass through deer either. Shooting .50 cal makes a big enough hole going in. I shoot 110 gr Pyrodex. carbonhunter
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? I always had pass throughs as well, untill i started shooting shockwaves now ive had two deer that had bullets on the far side of the deer, both dropped in there tracks. Guest Xen
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? i have only found 2 of the bullets that i have killed animals with, and i really enjoy them. i look at the bullet and remember the entire hunt all over. i didn't have to track them, i saw them drop. too_pointer
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? I always try for a behind the shoulder shot, and the majority do pass through. Hitting the shoulder bone can stop alot of bullets from passing through. The bullet design also has alot to do with it along with how heavy the powder charge is too. A well placed shot will take deer down in a hurry, so a great blood trail isn't always needed. I would rather have a pass through with an arrow, not always needed with a bullet. too_pointer
Guest jereseyhunter101
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? I rather have the bullet not go all the way through. On most of my experiences when i didnt have a pass through the deer either drop or didnt go far. I like it when i can also have the bullet as a rememberence of the hunt. wtnhunt
Re: Question about finding bullets in game??? Only deer with the ml where we have not had pass throughs was the buck I killed last year at about 100 yards out. Was shooting a 240 grain xtp mag with 120 grains of pyrodex. Hit the back of the shoulder and the bullet must have deflected slightly off of bone. The bullet was found in the opposite side when skinning a little further back than where it should have come out.
