whitetailtrax
Man I love opening day of archery elk season in Montana - just doesn't get any better! This year I decided to bring my 7 year old (Brett) and 13 year old (Tanner) with me. Tanner is rifle hunting, but will not bow hunt till next year. Anyway, dad slept in (shame on me) and then we had to rush the rest of the morning to get out in the woods. When we got to the parking spot, someone else was already there, but it's a big area, so no big deal. After a 20 minute walk into our area, I spotted elk with the binos at the end the closed road we were on and so we set off in their direction. When we got within 200 yards, I cow called and immediately a bull screamed back at me - you should have seen the smiles on my boys faces! We put together a game plan and then closed the distance to about 100 yards and set up to see if we could bring him in. He was very vocal and responsive to my cow calls, but unfortunatly another hunter came flying in behind us bugling like crazy. Knowing it would all be over soon, I pushed the envelope and moved in on the bull - got to within 60 yards, but never saw him and eventually he took his cows and moved off in a big hurry - bugling the whole way! What a great morning! My boys were flat out tickled to get that close and hear that bull screaming - if you've never experienced it, it is hair raising for sure! They were disappointed I didn't get a shot, but that's all part of hunting. Can't wait to get back out there! Mark
texastrophies
Sounds like a heck of hunt. Nothing better than spending time in the outdoors with your kids. Good luck next time out. Don't forget to set that alarm clock. :D:D

toddyboman
Sounds like a great hunt!!! hear that bull screaming - if you've never experienced it, it is hair raising for sure! You are 100% right about that. We was mule deer hunting in CO several years ago. And a big 5x5 bull came in bugling and caring on. Sure was wishing I had an elk tag. But boy it was a show I have NEVER forgot!!
OJR
The bugling tends to get a person excited, that is for sure! Quite the sound!
_MD_
Nothing beats sharing a crisp morning bugle with your kids. Good job. On the other hand season has been slow at my end of the valley. No bugling but do have plenty of hunters running amuck...LOL
