wtnhunt
Will be planting here hopefully very soon. Worked our dry hard ground here again this past weekend, snapped a few shots while I was out. Got some rain last night and today, so soil working conditions should be a bit better this weekend. First pic here is of the treeline going along where we will be planting our winter brassicas mix from hamann farms, will add either winter wheat or some wintergrazer rye along in that plot. This other plot that kind of ties into that is going to be a test plot of sorts with a mix of hamann farms grower mix along with a high sugar content rye and maybe just a little chickory mixed in. A shot from the opposite end standing under the oak tree where one stand is located Last shot here is of where we plan to plant another plot of the hamann farms grower mix along with some chickory. Could not get the yellowed grass to work into the dry soil, so I ended up burning the grass off the entire plot Sunday afternoon, little manageable sections at a time. Think I may also plant some of the hamann farms winter mix along the edges of this plot with winter wheat mixed in.

dogdoc
looks great--Have you planted the Hamann Farms winter mix before? I screwed up this year and didn't get any ordered--just ended up planting some generic rape and I know it won't do as well. My deer have hammered Martin's winter brassica mix in the past--best winter mix I have ever planted. I always plant it with wheat. I did plant some of his grower mix that I had left over since I didn't get to plant any last year due to the extreme drought. look forward to the progress reports. We are expecting rain here all weekend so hopefully my plots will germinate next week. todd
wtnhunt
Have you planted the Hamann Farms winter mix before? Planted it last year Todd, about a half an acre worth total. Bought 10 lbs, and used half of it in two smaller mini plots, will be using the remaining seed this year in the one extended plot. Really think there was too much available food here last year and the brassicas mix was not hit quite like I expected, and from what I saw the deer ate the greens some but never dug up the turnips or beets. I did however almost get an opportunity on a great mature 10 pointer in that winter mix plot after our first hard frost one morning. Unfortunately a younger buck out ahead of the one I had my bow drawn on spooked with me needing the buck to take just a few steps for a clean shot. That was the most activity I saw in that plot, was that group of 5 bucks on a cold October morning. I expect this year to be quite different as I am certain the drought will have food sources a bit more limited.
