Well tonight I got my first state land squirrel, and one of my biggest squirrels to date, a really nice grey! I missed two other squirrels also. I'll be going back to that spot! There is a photo of the tail in the small game forum...I didn't get a picture of the "whole" squirrel. The one squirrel I missed was a big one also...geesh.

Finally!

I've been putting in some serious time with my bow, and through all of it, I only saw one truly gorgeous 10-point (who stayed in the thick and never gave me a bow shot). Tonight, 30 minutes into sitting, this 5-point came along grunting away at our backyard doe (who still has her twin button bucks at her side). I decided that I've sat long enough and it was time to kill something! He didn't give me a broadside view, so I shot him straight-away with the muzzleloader - dropped dead where he stood! :D

How are the rest of you doing?

Thanks, Andrea, for the compliment. He's certainly not the biggest buck on the block. . . but the thrill of the hunt was just as big when he came grunting his way through the woods!

Good to read that you at least saw deer this morning. That's not always a given, as we all know! Good luck your next time out.

Here's another photo of me and the buck, complete with my own personal little fan club! :D

Good luck to you, too, Outdoorgirl, on getting that nice 10-pointer!

Ruth, all I can say is you rule! Or whatever the slang is these days for going out there and getting it done! I knew that you were doing well this fall, but lining them all up like that sure puts it in perspective. Way to go! :D

Oh, and then there's that side thing you have going on right now, too . . . . a little something called nursing school. Congrats on doing so well in school and on making the time to get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!

Laura

ps - Thanks for the kind comment on our kids. . . the two of them and my husband really are my biggest fan club and God's greatest gifts to me. :)

Congratulations to everyone who's had successful seasons so far! Some beautiful trophies posted above! :D

I wish I had a more successful 2007 hunting season, but have only managed to shoot a single squirrel so far. It's the first squirrel I've shot since I was 13, so it was exciting. I might get the squirrel mounted just because I didn't mangle it with the shot and it had a really nice coat. Other than that I went for my first year archery hunting for 2-weeks straight. You can read about my trip in my journal entry. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63305&p=792263

I shot this squirrel at 25-yards with a Remington Model 870 Express .410-Gauge shotgun with some #6 shot small game shells. I had to thread the needle out the blind around a tiedown from the blind and through a hole the size of a golf ball in thick brush. I think I did a pretty good job. Aimed for the eye and hit just behind it with one bb and had several others hit in the vitals around it. Here's the squirrel below.

I have one more hunting trip this year to get a deer and I get to hunt a week during that trip with the rifle, so hopefully I can post up a deer picture or two in December. ;)

Success !

I've mostly just been a "lurker" but wanted to share my success so far this year. The first buck was taken Nov 5th in South Texas. He's only a 7pt but he had a 21" outside, 19 1/2" inside spread and weighed 184 lbs. I was also able to get a nice sow and my first Rio Grande turkey on my trip. The second deer was taken Nov 11th on our central Florida lease. He's an 8pt with a 16" inside spread and weighed 140 lbs. Both deer, the hog and turkey were all taken with my Thompson Center Pro Hunter 7mm-08. I also took my first deer with bow during archery season. It was doe. I had forgotten my camera so I don't have any pics.

Just hope I haven't used up all my good luck this early in the season.......

Well, I went out Sunday morning. Had a small 6 point stop about 20 yards in front of me and just stand there. He was working a scrape and grazed a little. He was broadside for a solid minute just standing there. I think he knew he was safe. I let him walk, so he can get bigger for next year. Even though I didn't take a shot it was still very exciting to know I could have but didn't. Also let me know that my scent control was working. Maybe a bigger one will come out this weekend. Have some trail pics of a nice wide 8 pt.

my big buckI had been hunting the first week gun season only to see 2 little does. I was so disappointed because it was the only weekend I would get to hunt because I was having surgery on my ankle on Monday and would not be able to walk for 2 months. The day after my surgery my husband killed a nice 10 pointer so then I told him that maybe I would feel good enough to go hunting on Friday. On Friday afternoon my husband drove me to the ditch line and let me out. I took my crutches and threw them across the ditch and crawled through the ditch to the other side and waited. One hour later this 11 point buck came out. Needless to say I took him down with out thinking twice. Not everyone can say they killed a buck of a lifetime on crutches.

I have had a few successful hunts this year. Deer hunting weekend was a success with me taking 3 for the group. Pheasant hunting has been good also, numbers have been up.
