I Don't Understand Some People

I had a deal with a gentleman from Pa. He was going to give me his beagle hunting dog in exchange for one of my rifles. It was a fair deal and he agreed. I told him that since he was almost three hours away that I would come out and trial run the dog. See if the dog was a good rabbit dog as he described. I told him that if I liked the dog that I would write him a check for the amount he wanted and take the dog. The next day I would ship the gun from a ffl dealer here to an ffl dealer near him so the gun gets out of my name and registered in his name. When the gun arrives, I just asked for him to mail me back my check. First his asks if the gun can be registered in his son's name and I agreed. I was to go to Pa tommorrow. He just emailed me stating if I don't bring and leave the gun the deal is off. So I emailed him stating that the deal is off. I'm not going to leave a gun in someone's hands that is registered in my name. I never met the man and I don't trust the man, especially after he didn't want the gun registered in his name. He probably had a record and couldn't register it. This guy has some set of stones. That's all I need is some guy commiting a crime with this gun and it come back to me. This was a good dog and a good deal-too bad. What do you guys think of this guy? Would you have done the same if you were me? What would you have done different? Unbelievable!!!

Sounds to me like you made a wise last minute decision.:)

Your first deal you made with him was a commendable, trusting, deal on your part and a legal safety net for you also.

I wouldn't feel bad backing out under the circumstances . Like you said, you may have just saved yourself a legal headache or more. ;) JMHO

Sorry, but I don't agree.

I think the whole arrangement smelled from the start.

Taking the side of the gentleman from PA; How was he to know that your check was anything more than just a piece of paper?

You are asking him to show more trust than you are willing to show.

You would be picking up the dog at his house in PA, but he don't really know that you are who you say you are from NY.

Would you be willing to leave cash money with the man from PA until you returned with the gun?

He knows that your check is a worthless piece of paper until it is cashed, but you expect him to take your word that the check is good.

I think it is better that the deal is off, since neither of you were willing to trust the other.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with some of you. I'm not a crook and I wanted to do things legally and transfer the gun legally. What's the problem with people. Do you really think I would just hand over a legally registered gun to someone I know nothing about. The transaction would have been legally executed through ffl dealers unless he had something to hide. I have nothing to hide.

Afraid I have to agree with popgun on this one too. Seems there was a mutual feeling of distrust and with that being the case, probably best for you both that the transaction did not go forward. Would forget about it and move on. Does no one any good to hold ill feelings towards the man for not understanding his reasoning which may not have been intended to be malicious in any way.

I gotta agree with Popgun on this also. You would have the dog, and be 3 hours away and all he has is a piece of paper (check) which may or may not be any good, and even if it was good could easily have a stop payment issued on it and then the guy would have nothing. If anything, the guy you were dealing with was showing a lot more trust in you than he should have been doing. That is why COB is the best way to go. IF you still want the dog, just buy it from him and then sell the gun elsewhere. Seems pretty simple to me.
