Re: Ohmipain Roundup

I think it might be possible...I need some directions though.

Nut can give you the specifics Nick. I used to live there, but I don't remember the exact exits. One of the exits will probably say Fallen Timbers monument. Basically it's Route 23 south, across the border. 23 turns into 475 and they run together for a bit, then you take one of the Maumee or Perrysburg exits. You can see that island Fred has been posting pictures of from the bridge when you go over the Maumee River. It's pretty easy.

BTW--anyone know how the Maumee got its name?

CLOSE!

Way back when, an Indian was crossing the river via a fallen log. Well when he was aboooot half way across the river, the log shifted in the swift current which tossed the Indian into the current. As the hapless indian plunged to his death, his buddies on the distant bank heard him yell "Maaaaaauuuuuummmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Local joke, I'm sure Fred can back me up on that one. grin.gif

Re: 2005 Ohmipain ROUND UP

Just a quick note guys:

Bring a lot of tackle, snags of common, some areas are really rocky.

And you will catch your fair share of big Buffalo Suckers.

Bring a lot of plastic grub tails (I like Berkley Power Grubs), floating jig heads (you can find them at Gander Mountian), and enough line to last the weekend (you'll lose some with the snags) and a lot of heavy spilt-shots or other type of weights.

I normally just rig the floating jig head like a carolina rig, using a bullet. Fred sounds more experienced them me and should have some better tips.

There ya' go Matt. I haven't walked the Maumee in aboooot 10 years, but the only change I know of since then is the limit is down to 3 I believe. As far as tackle, I think you're only allowed a single hook, don't know if it has to be barbless or not, and I know you're not allowed to snag. If you catch one, it better be hooked IN the mouth. If it's anywhere around the mouth, better turn that fish loose. There are all kinds of DNR agents prowling undercover down there, and they've even been known to sit on the opposite bank over in Perrysburgh with a spotting scope and walkie talkie. They nab tons of snaggers every year.
