Re: Best 22

Marlin, Savage, CZ, and probably a few others have good performing bolt rimfire guns that won't break the bank. Which one is best... I dunno. I would not turn down any of them.

Try a box of a bunch of different ammo types and see what shoots the best in whichever gun you decide to get. My experience shows that standard velocity ammo (target ammo) shoots much better than the high velocity stuff. If you are punching holes in paper, it can't be beat. For squirrels it works great also. For groundhogs I would go with high velocity stuff though.

Re: Best 22

ok new question.......sorry I am difficult. At least that what my wife says.....you hunt all the time why don't you spend time with me blah blah blah.

So back to my question. The .17 hmr. Is this a better all around rifle. is this caliber good from anything from squirrels to coyotes? I guess if it is good for more uses I better purchase that so I don't get yelled at more? grin.gif

Re: Best 22

dittto wit JimT from what i read in here id rather have a .22 and a 223 for the other stuff, i shoot a marlin 22 semi. the gun yhas a scope and is dead on out to 70 yards...plenty of woodchuck gun. The .17 is only like a 14 grain bullit so i dont see how it would be much over the 22, unless you plan on killing rat tails at 100+ yards.

Re: Best 22

Another vote for the 22 lr. I have a few .22 lr guns and one .22 Magnum. The magnum usually collects dust. If I were going after bigger varmints or shooting 80-125 yards, I would take the .22 Magnum.

The ammo is so much cheaper with the .22 lr also. Granted you can buy $12/box of 50 .22 lr ammo, but you can also get $9/bulk box of 550. So it does not shoot quite as tight as the expensive stuff, its still great for building shooting form, a day of plinking, and it is a lot quieter.

One option you can go with is the H&R Sportster. Granted it is only a single shot, but they do shoot good. Another thing cool with these guns is the extra barrel offer. You can get a .22 lr, .22 Mag, and .17 HRM for the same receiver. Extra barrels cost between $55 and $63 each. Not too bad.

OK folks I need your help. I am looking for a 22 LR. What is the best rifle for the money. I am looking for accuracey as I don't have any need for an auto! I have heard great stuff on the savage but not sure if its the best

If you're looking for a Bolt Action I'd suggest the CZ M-452 "American Classic". For a great little semi-auto, I suggest a T/C Rimfire Classic.

Re: Best 22

I picked up a used Ruger 77/22 a few years ago for under $200. It is a great looking bolt action 22 rifle & the accuracy is pretty good as well. I do not know if it is teh best but it sure is my favorite grin.gif

I also have a ruger 10/22. A great little rifle. I plan on updating it with a heavy aftermarker bull barrel, better trigger & new stock. It will be a great addition!

Re: Best 22

I have two .22's.

I have a Ruger 10/22 .22lr with some mods. The Ruger is sporting a Hogue stock, Adams & Bennett heavy match barrel, Volquartsen 2000 Trigger, and an aftermarket extractor. Shots incredible. I can shoot dimes at 50 yards all day long.

I also have a Remington 597 .22 Mag. On this gun I have just gone with a Volquartsen Target Hammer, drops trigger pull to @ 3 lbs. This gun will also shot dimes all day long at 50 yards, 1.5" groups at 100 yards also.

Re: Best 22

I have three .22's. A Ruger 10/22, Winchester 9422, Stevens Visaloader.

My Ruger will be 22 years old this fall and is still as accurate as the day I bought it. I used it on my trap line for years and took quite a beating with no complaints. If I need an accurate .22 (shooting iron sights mind you) I will grab the 10/22 without hesitation. I love my 25 shot clip for fun shooting. Plus if you go to Midwest.com there are a TON of accessories for it.

I bought the 9422 in 1987 and I have used it some. It has beautiful walnut is well made. Extremely accurate but I just don't use it much.

The Stevens is just a collectors item. I rarely shoot it.

My 2 cents

Re: Best 22

Well, I gotta give some support to the .17hmr. I have a Marlin 917v (Wal-Mart-$179) that is a great gun. It doesn't cost much more than even the cheapest .22's, and it performs so much better. It is also a lot cheaper than a decent .220 or .22-250. It is a good in-between caliber. Ammo isn't the cheapest, I pay $8 a box, but look at the accuracy you are getting. I have not heard of a 917 that wouldn't shoot under 1 1/2" at 100 yards, and most will shoot well under that. And it is a versatile caliber, you can use it for anything from squirrels to coyotes. Don't trash a cartidge if you don't have any experience with it wink.gif
