Eventful Opener in Wisconsin

I had a pretty eventful opener in Wisconsin this past weekend. We had a killing frost opening morning with temps around 30. Most plants were dead by the afternoon. I listened to my neighbor shoot a deer about 50-60 yards away from my "Pure Attraction" food plot Saturday evening.:( He's about 25-30 yards off the fence on two trails coming into the food plot. I could see a salt block and apples from the fence the next day when I went to look for blood along the property line. Last night I watched a large Bobcat lie in the grass on the natural gas pipeline right of way that crosses our property. After about 10 minutes 4 jake and 1 tom turkeys crossed on a deer trail within 10 yards of the cat. The cat stood up and wanted nothing to do with the 5 birds. The birds started clucking up a storm and actually chased the cat back into the woods. It was awesome. I only saw a few does and fawns but that made my night. Those are the things that keep you going back.

My WI opener was eventful too but not in the way I wanted it to be.

About 7pm Saturday evening I shot a big mature doe. With a lumenock on my arrow, I could see the shot since the arrow was sticking out of her side as she took off. Arrow was a little high behind the front shoulder. However, since she was almost under my stand when I shot I wasn't worried about the height so much.

With several bad experiences last year still in my mind, I opted to wait to look for her till the next morning. I fully expected to find her but it was getting dark fast and the weeds and grass are tall.

So yesterday morning my husband and I and a cousin whos an excellent tracker went out at sunup to find her.

We didn't.

We searched for two hours. No arrow, no blood, no deer.

I'm frustrated and wondering what went wrong. Could I have hit her shoulder bone? At such close range, that arrow should have went through. I just don't know. :(

Sorry to hear about the doe! Any lost deer leaves a foul taste in your mouth and weighs heavy on the heart. With all due respect, people shooting lesser poundage bows (and all archers for that matter) need to be the most patient and selective about picking the right shot opportunity. I believe an exit hole is a must in quick recovery of an archery shot deer. Every arrow released makes us better and you learn from it. Don't give up looking for your doe though. Even if you find her later, you can still learn from the carcass. You can maybe backtrack her and the experience may help you in the future. Feeling bad about it is a good thing. A true sportsman/woman who loses an animal will have it weigh heavy on them. Get back on the horse and ride. God Bless!

Uneventful opener for me. All I saw was a bunch of squirrels and a couple sandhill cranes. My Dad saw 1 doe but not anywhere near his range. It will only get better though.

To answer you question ladydiehard, you may have caught the shoulder on the other side keeping you from complete penetration. That's too bad you weren't able to find her. As long as you did everything you could to find her, that's all you can do. Better luck in the future.

Thanks for the encouragement to get back out there. Although I hadn't seriously thought about giving it up, there is a co-worker of mine that really bothers me. Hes an avid bowhunter, considers himself a pro, and hes not a very nice guy. He said that maybe I should just stick to gun hunting. I was ready to clobber him. I don't think I'm going to share experiences with him anymore. I do so to gain knowledge, get advice, etc. But all he gives me is junk. I don't need the discouragement when I already feel bad as it is.

That sounds like an awsome day. Your right it isn't about how much you kill. It's about having fun and enjoying being out there. Hope your luck get better and you can draw some blood on a deer. Good Luck to ya and enjoy.

I had a good Wisconsin opener too..

Had 7 jakes in the food plot with me opening morning, i saw movement on my right, and it was 2 coyotes coming in on the turkeys. One of them gave me a shot, but it all happened so fast that i only had a few seconds to react. So i didnt bag me a coyote, but he left with a pretty groovy little haircut on his back. (i looked for blood only found hair). The two started chasin the turkeys but the jakes fought back and ran the dogs rite out of the food plot...that was entertaining. I also managed to bag a nice doe sat nite, so i got my golden egg of a buck sticker :). Also saw a pretty good little 8 pt on sunday nite. So other than my fiberoptics on my pin breakin off...it was a good weekend.

Ladydiehard,

sorry to hear....how high are you sitting and how close was the deer?

Just curious as you're probably shooting a lower poundage bow....if you're taking a steep angle shot, you may not have the Kinetic Energy to get the penetration for that steep of an angle.

just a thought...good luck the rest of season.

I sit 16 feet up and the deer was almost under my stand so about 10 yards. I shoot 40lbs. Angle was pretty steep.

i'm so sorry to hear that!......last year i got almost sick to my stomach..i shot a good doe perfect shot *little high* kinda like the shot you said u had but i shot it at 18 yards with a 40# bow (i now have a 60# because of this experience ) and i shot the deer and it runs off and it's raining at the time. so there is no blood trail whatsoever and we look all that night and then we got up at sunup and kept looking and looking. we finally said "we did all we could we just have to back out" and one the walk back we see a white belly....DEER DOWN!!!! how we found it is we decided to walk back along the creek. that deer hugged the side of that creek until it died. we looked it over and i got an awesome shot but it only clipped 1 lung cuz i was shoot 40#'s now i'm not saying 40#'s isn't ok to shoot i might have hit a rib or something but i just decided i didn't want to go through that again so i bought me a 60# hoyt razortec. i know how you feel. sorry to here that.

if you have a creek running through the property i would check that creek over real good.
