how would you make a lockon tree stand

Every thread I've read from this site about making homemade stands recieves numerous responces about just buying them. They all refer to the safety issue of making your own stand. Out of the ten stands I own, only two are store bought. I haven't had a bit of trouble with any that I've made. All I do is go to the store and see how the store bought made ones are put together and steal thier ideas. As long as you are good at welding there should be no problem. For me, I enjoy hunting out of a stand that I made, plus it gives me something to do related to hunting during the off season. Give it a try, then set the stand up about three feet off the ground and test its strength before you hang it 15-25 feet off the ground.

gander mtn or dicks now sell lock ons for 39 dollars i think just simply for safety thats your best bet and you would be hard pressed to build one cheaper!

Ditto!!!

Also, the factory made stands come with a warranty and are tested to a certain weight. That alone, makes buying one the smarter way to go!!!

again...if someone is a machinest and works well with metals...making one may be fun, rewarding, challenging, etc. then go for it...

I personally would never make a stand out off wood anymore in a tree. I have heard/seen to many things go wrong for hunters.

But as they say" hind sight is 20/20" and being up in a treestand that malfunctions is not a good situation to be in.

Just be careful...I look for stands to go on sale after the season and get better pricing in preparation for next year too.

ive got 32 stands LOL but all are store bought... seems like alot of cash, but you can get these things half price or less after season. I can weld, but its still cheaper for me to go to dicks, walmart, or gander mountain and get their stands when on sale. Espically the 15ft ladder stands which are 40bucks on sale.

I bought 2 of the loggy bayou pro predators this spring for 60bucks each, which are normally 150buck stands. I cant wait to try those out. But i have enough to never run out, plus I buy about 3-4 more each season. My wife says im obessed with treestands

back on topic, if you can weld and have the materials, just look at some of yours you have and try to design one. Someone mentioned the 25buck comfort zone hang ones.. I have 2 and stand stand those. The platform is way to small, espically when getting up above 15ft lol.. but they are nice to have just in case you need one more stand at the last minute to use

what kind of lader steps do you guys get or do you make your own steps

Have 3 homemade ladder stands made from round tubing. Have a blind made from the same steel tubing.

For stick ladders, I have a 16 foot stick ladder that is made from square tubing. If you can weld and get steel cheap enough you might come out ok, my stick ladder came from leftovers from another project. Steel prices are so ridiculous anymore you are probably better off buying your ladders. I bought some sections from wal mart last fall for less than I could have built them for by the time you figure my tubing, the rod, and the electric.

I would not fool with wood, too much potential for risk.

I've made climbers and ladder stands over the years but never a lock-on. Some of my friends have though and they work pretty good, but i dont have pics. As for the ladder, I thought about making some 2 years ago, but I ordered them off of sportsmans guide cheaper than I could buy the tubing. Absolutlely nothing wrong with making your own as long as you can weld :p.

I would never go with a wooden lock-on!!

you can buy a lock on for a reasonable price. its almost as cheap by the time you buy your supplies and put your time into it. i would rather scout and hang a stand than to build it. also with the stands my dad and i built they tend to squeak and creek and pop a few seasons later.
