coles
i am planning on going hunting for turkeys in the spring with one of my buddys and i was wondering what i need. shot size?, will a patternmaster choke work? 3 inch or 3.5? etc. any advice on this would greatly help. thanks cole
Strut_Buster
Re: basic items for turkey? Shoot a extra full choke with 3 inch to 3.5 inch shells. Whichever shell size you can handle. I shoot Winchester Supreme 3.5 #6's out of an Undertaker Choke tube. Other basic Items include Head/face net. Call(s) (one you feel comfotable with) Locator call (s) {Crow call} Knife Bugspray Small Binocs decoy
James7xChamp3
Re: basic items for turkey? I would also add a cushion or small seat. The ground gets mighty hard witing for a gobbler to show himself.
RyanH
Re: basic items for turkey? I like a 3.5 round with about 5 shot coming outta it! I us a xxfull choke made from Comp-n-choke! All the items that Strut Buster commited about!
lil hunter
Re: basic items for turkey? If you want to spend the money on one, a good turkey vest is a GREAT investment. It makes it sooo much easier to keep things organized. You should also buy one or two slate calls(I like H.S. Strut lil Deuce II) A few mouth calls, these will take a little while to learn. A superfull choke tube( I use H.S. Undertaker, but theres tons of others) a Box call, nice and loud, good for locating gobblers a locator call is isn't necessary, but if you'd like it, go ahead. I've heard gobblers react to hawk's more than anything else in the wild. Light camo gloves and facemask.(These are a necessity) And theres probly a few other things, but it's time for supper. Strut10
Re: basic items for turkey? You will need a shotgun that will toss a reasonably tight pattern of #5 or #6 shot to at least 30 yards. Even a factory standard fixed full or modified choke will be sufficient. You will need a quality buffered, plated-shot shotgun shell like a Winchester Supreme, Federal Premium, etc. Then the bare minimums in my book: 1. Appropriate camoflauge (head to toe including face net , gloves and dark-colored socks). 2. A call that you can use fairly well.......diaphragm, slate, box, push-button.......whatever. 3. Conditioning materials for your call(s)......boxcall chalk, sandpaper, scuffing pad, etc. That's all you really need to have. Then there's all the "gingerbread" items that make turkey hunting more comfortable. The list of these sorts of things is endless. But here's some of the more popular (and in some cases useful ) ones: turkey vest seat or cushion binoculars locator calls decoys flourescent orange hat blind gun rest pocket pruning shears Just remember......it's O.K. to get caught up in the "accessorizing game".......but it absolutely ain't neccessary. robk
Re: basic items for turkey? there are several vests that you can have a seat on that you just have to unbutton the seat formt he harness. also make sure you have a set up where you have easy access to calls and such also i take plenty of goodies to keep me going just some snacks and plenty of water unless your close to your camp or lodge. you won't need extra stuff. good luck and also for me i use a 2 3/4 but may go to the 3" model high velocity remington or winchester for my turkey. i prefer the #6 shot and it does great for taking down a bird and they aren't magnum i don't feel i need them rob k
coles
Re: basic items for turkey? i have a beretta extrema 3.5 and it has a black synthetic stock. will the turkey see it. my friend and his dad both have black guns and they say they work fine. but i was just wondering. Strut10
Re: basic items for turkey? Coles........ You'll be fine. My primary turkey gun is a black / synthetic Super X2. The color of the gun has posed no problems. The big thing is to stay still and keep the gun still. All movements must be made ultra-slowly and hopefully when the turkey can't see you do it. A turkey will see EVERYTHING that moves suddenly..............no matter what color or camo pattern it is.
snapper
Re: basic items for turkey? I agree with Strut...you can use a black gun and have no problems, as long as its a matte black barrel and not a shiny blued barrel. If it were me and the barrel was blued...I'd try some tape or sock to take the glare off of it. Try some different loads and if possible different chokes. Just about any combo will work if you got the bird within 30 yards or closer.
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: basic items for turkey? My first turkey several years ago all I had was: Win 1300 12 ga. (black) A hand full of 12 ga. #5 shells Camo pants, jacket, gloves, hat, & facemask all from deer hunting. Cody slate call (my only turkey call at the time). That was it. That is all you need to kill a turkey. Granted, since that time, I've spent thousands of dollars on turkey equipment, most of which I would not head into the woods without this spring. My point is that you can hunt turkeys economically. Once you get the bit by the bug, start adding to your equiment list to make you more versital and more comfortable while chasing these goofy birds. Good luck this spring! Turkey hunting is an addiction like no other.
redbeard
Re: basic items for turkey? All of the above are true indeed but if you don't carry along a bucket full of patience, you might as well stay home. Good luck.

[/ QUOTE ] I use a benelli Nova for Turkey hunting that is black. I take gun tape and cover it up. and then theres this leafy take stuff. I put that on it. Now thats a camo gun lol. If your worried about it buy 2 rolls of gun camo tape and tape it up.. just be shure to remove it after the season useing rubbing alcohol (residue) and gun oil for the metal. Rhino
Re: basic items for turkey? Looks like just about everything has been covered except.....there will be a time when nature calls so put some TP in a zip loc bag and put it in your turkey vest or a pocket for when nature calls. I consider this one of my basic essentials because the other options really suck.
Guest beardsNspurs
Re: basic items for turkey? There's only 2 things absolutely necessary in my book....and that is a good gun and head to toe camo. All those other things sure make the hunt nicer and easier to enjoy....but those 2 are the absolute's. As far as those other nice things.....well I think they've all been covered in this thread already.
