FSU_Seminole
I'm so pysched guys. Just bought a very beautiful rifle. A Remington 700 LSS 50th Anniversay 280.I'm in total love with this gun!!!!! The look & the feel. I haven't put any glass on top of it yet but I'll probably do that around Christmas. I don't want to rush buying a scope, I want something to fit this gun perfectly. Got a question for you guys though. Why the heck isn't the 280 as popular as the 270? I was shooting another 280 over the weekend & the performance was just as good as my 270 with very little recoil difference if any. Some people "gun writer for Outdoor Life Jim Carmichel & Dave Petzel at Field & Stream" swear the 280 is just as good as the 270 or slightly better. I've only met 1 guy who owns one. Is it just a case of a particular shell not having a catchy name? How many .280 owners do we have here?
Guest PTtaxidermy
I guess one reason it's not so popular, is that if you go up to Canada, or out west in the sticks somewhere, and you left your ammo at home, chances are Mom and Pop's grocery/sporting goods/hardware store will carry the popular calibers, .30 06, 300 Win, and .270. I would hate to get caught with an unpopular caliber on a trip of a life time. I don't know if that is a valid reason, but that is why I bought a .270 vs. the .
mehunter
Thats a nice looking weapon...hope it shoots as good as it looks.
Shaun_300
That is a sweet weapon, I almost bought the same style in .17 HMR at one of the local gunshows. But I decided to wait and get a centerfire rifle that I'd use more often. Congrats on the gun, it looks great!
WaCoyote
Very nice!! Let us know how it shoots. Many writers think that the 280 is superior to the 270. I can't believe there'd be any appreciable difference. between a .277 and a .284 cal pill. I'd probably lean towards the 280 myself but I have my pop's 270 and probably will never buy a 280. The Remington 700 LSS with its stainless action and grey laminated stock, is my all-time favorite Remington rifle, and the 280 Remington is an EXCELLENT cartridge. You made a great choice. Kill a big one and God bless, By the way, I'm a Florida State Fan as well.
FSU_Seminole
Hey guys thanks for all the kind words. I'll defenitely let you know how she shoots this winter. Also to, it was some others on here looking for this exact gun. PM me & I will give you the name of a place where you can order it online for a reasonable price. I've seen this same exact rifle out of the box being offered for upwards to 900$, which is WAY OVER PRICED.

Missed160
Looking at ballistics the 280 nudges out the 270 in most categories. I just don't think they ever achieved the popularity of the 270 because the difference(s), advantages just weren't great enough. The 270 has such name recognition & is so well established. wtnhunt
Sweet rifle. Congratulations. Think the .280 is an overlooked round to be honest. The .270 has been around for a good while though and is pretty versatile. Stepping up from it you have the .30 calibers and the .308 and .30-06 offer a lot of versatility. Really dont know much about ammo availability for the .280, but bet it is not as common in stores as the factory loads you can get at pretty well any wal mart for a .270, .308, or .30-06. The .270 has been around for a good while though and is pretty versatile. Stepping up from it you have the .30 calibers and the .308 and .30-06 offer a lot of versatility......... Pretty much it in a nutshell. The 280's a great round. But the 30-06 has been around about 50 years longer and the 270 about 25 years longer. Both the 270 and '06 had a darned big headstart on becoming mainstreamed and popular. When compared to either of the earlier rounds, the 280 really has only miniscule advantages over them in one area or another. If a fellow was buying his first rifle, the 280 makes good sense. If he's already got a 270, 308 or '06 there's just no good reason for a 280. But you've got a beautiful gun there and it oughta be a real shooter for you. I have a 270 & a couple of 06s but I've always wanted a 308 but I got to thinking about the .280. I chose this gun simply because its beautiful, limited edition & because of the ballistics. Carmichel wrote that if a guy is torn betweening chosing a 270 or 30.06 or wanted something in between he should buy a 280. You guys know how things are. Guns to most of us are like shoes to women.
