Guest andymansavage
My dog sliced her leg up on tuesday and had to get 12 stitches on a gash on the inside of her lower left rear leg between the achilles tendon and the calf muscle. She had a drain that was removed yesterday (by her). the wound looks good and we have been applying triple antibiotic and re-bandaging it. Here is the question: when do we leave the stitches uncovered, or do we keep it bandaged until they come out? Andy
dogdoc
I usually keep all stitches on legs covered (or keep an e-collar on) until they are ready to be removed. I change the bandage every 72 hours just to make sure the sutures are holding and there is no infection. Dogs hate anything on their legs and will usually chew/lick the stitches out if they are not protected. good luck todd
Guest andymansavage
Thanks, I was going to PM you, but thought I would see if anyone else knew. She keeps tearing off the bandage if we leave her alone, so I guess we will be hauling her around for a bit. Kind of a pain with an 85 pound Weimeraner, but it is better than her ripping her leg back open. Thanks again, andy
stevebeilgard
maybe use doc's recommendation and put a collar on her.
