I'm a huge advocate of fixed blade. I think while mechanicals may be more effective on a perfect shot, fixed blades are more beneficial on marginal shots, such as if you clip a shoulder. The added penetration and reliability of the fixed blades (cough cough muzzy's) are important to me. I killed a doe last year at 38 yards directly into the front shoulder. It was the first deer i shot with a muzzy, and i couldnt believe the penetration i got on such a terrible shot. Also left a whole the size golf ball. Just my two cents on this never ending debate.

I'll be the different one here, i like fixed blades but i will hunt with Mechanical over fixed, i've had fixed blades turn in flight and hit off of my target, though Montecs are my back up if i have to use a fixed, I shot my first couple of deer with NAPA spitfires and never had a tracking job past 100 yards even of kind of bad shoots, this year i'm trying them RAG SLIP CAM'S, i was lookin into them and watched some vid's of the hole the 2 blade's make and it's crazy, a 2inch entrance and exit hole is just devostating even if you hit back...check em out....www.ragebroadheads.com

Between myself and the folks i know who shoot spitfires...dozens of deer have been taken with them over the years since they came out. I havent heard of any bad experiences with them...with the heads themselves... a few bad hits are in the mix ... but thats not the heads fault. As for me...im going to keep shooting them until i find a good reason not to...with any luck that wont happen.

Bowhunting is a tough enough sport, and I just dont trust my hard earned shot to something that relies on some mechanical mechanism to open or slide, or however the particular head works. I am shooting montecs right now, and they fly great, penetrate well (on the target, havent gotton a shot at a deer with them yet), and they are resharpenable. I think (Im not saying everyone does this) a lot of people shoot mechanicals because they dont require tuning. A properly tuned bow should shoot broadheads and field points nearly the same if not exactly the same. The way I think about it is if I do my job, it shouldnt matter what head you have on, but if Im a little off or something happens, I want to know that the head is willing to pick up the slack and get the job done. If your comfy with relying on a mechanical device (and this is life or death sitiations), then shoot one, but if your like me and dont leave anything to chance, its fixed blades.
