coyote attacks........

Recommended Posts

Only reports I have heard that were official were reports of attacks on small children and think there have been very few of them.

Closest encounter I have had with them on the ground was on an afternoon hunt about 5 years ago during our archery season. Had been hearing deer off in the hardwoods about 150 yards away going absolutely nuts, a lot of blowing and carrying on. I had no clue what was going on until after I was down from my climber and was on the ground, and I caught movement in the dim light out of the corner of my eye. I had 3 yotes slip in behind me while I was trying to untie my bow from my pull rope. Those yotes actually were coming towards me and were only about 30 yards away when I saw them. Had my flashlight in one hand, instinctively I yelled at them to get out of here, they continued closing in on me. Threw my arms up in the air, and yelled again and stomped my feet and kind of ran towards them and they took off. That walk back to the house in the dark was a quick one.

Kind of interesting that this topic was up this morning. Just a short while ago, had a yote run through my side pasture behind the house. Was watching some turkeys along the treeline. The cows and horses were watching the treeline, I figured something was up, but kind of thought they were watching the turkeys. The turkeys all kind of ran in a little circle and this yote ran right between them, looked to be kind of hobbling somewhat on its hind end as it was moving up the hill. I got my AR out of the cabinet as quickly as I could and dropped a loaded mag in and chambered a round, but it was gone before I got back to the sliding door.

Weekend I was planting our food plots had a yote follow me on the tractor. I think these yotes around here are not as fearful of man as they might be where occurences are lesser, but they are certainly still pretty wary of man encounters most of the time. Hoping the one I saw this morning will show up again, I am ready now.

Honestly here where there are stray and wild dogs, I really am more concerned about them attacking than a yote attacking. Think part of the reason for attacks on children might be if the child is crying, yotes associate the sound with an animal in distress and their predatory instinct tells them to take advantage of that. I am doubtful that a yote or pack of yotes would attack a standing or walking adult unless they had something wrong with them.

Never heard of yotes attacking around here. I've had a few close encounters with timberwolves, but I know they wouldn't have turned on me. They pretty much didn't see me at all until I moved, last year in rifle season one came flying out to me on a drive. I threw the .300 WSM up, pulled the hammer back, but he was gone by the time I could get a shot off at him.

In northern NJ last spring, it was all over thew local news here. A yote attacked a 5 year old kid and was dragging the kid in the woods. The kids 8 year old sister beat the dog with a stick and the yote took off. The 5 yo sustained bite marks to his shoulder and head area, but the kid is OK. The yote was eventually shot.

I guess they will attack whatever they feel like they can kill or are superior to.

This is in a area where there is just about NO hunting at all. What do they expect? This is the same area that fought to do away with the NJ bear hunt. Just wait until someone gets attacked by a bear. I hope it never happens, but when wildlife goes unchecked, it creates problems for us all.

I read in a hunting magazine a few years ago of a deer hunter here in KY that was climbing in his treestand, had a heart attack and fell to the ground. When he came to there was a pack of coyotes standin over him and he pretty much had to fight them off. When he didn't come home his wife went looking for him and had to run them off. Since then he started hunting coyotes year round and has killed over 100 of 'em. I think I would too. Talk about bad luck! I'll try to find the article online and post it.

last week while walking across the swamp i had a group of them come towards me too...they were howling away and i thought they just didn't know i was there...then one of them came running towards me until about 25 yards...it let out a couple small growls and then howled...it was getting kind of dark and i still wasn't convinced they knew i was there...so i did the same thing as that other guy and yelled waved my arms...then it circled around to the front of me..i finally ran towards it...did kind of a bluff charge and it bailed...the others i never saw...im about 99% sure it was just a case of mistaken identity...most likely it couldn't tell what i was....although a few nights ago i had something that sounded big follow me about 50 yards through the swamp...ive never had that happen before...i would stop and could hear it take 2 or 3 more steps then it would stop..it was moving really slow...i could hear it snapping twings and moving in the grass...but it's REALLY thick there and i can't see more then about 10 yards...it continued for about 50 yards before i stopped hearing it...creeped me out a little...especially cause there's lots of bear sign in the area...and we are just getting over a really bad drout so the natural food is low...no idea what it was...after about 40 yards the smell coming out of my pants must have deterred it..lol

has this ever even happened?? i mean not really u guys in general (unless it has happened to you) butlike has there been any reports about yote attacks ???????:o

On children YES, and unfortunately there have been a few if I am not mistaken on babies that have been fatal.

I have had coyotes turn aggressive towards me. Have had them growl at me. When you can see them it is not as big a deal, but when you cannot in the dark, it is kind of unnerving. One encounter I had with 3 yotes right at dark instinct took over and I charged them with my arms raised and yelling. They took off, but they did in fact come towards me and growled at me prior to me turning to being the aggressor. Dont know if they would have attacked me or not, but have had smaller dogs come after me in the past. Their nature as wild animal predators and survivalist, you just cannot rule out that there is a chance that they may for whatever reason attack.

I dont think that there has been one here in Ohio this year but a year or two ago one attacked a guy riding his bike near Cleveland in a park. Then almost 2 years ago up near Lake Erie in NE Ohio there were several dogs attacked on their porches at the house by yotes. I think one small dog was killed, one small dog was hurt bad and the 3rd dog attacked was a 70 lb dog that was hurt bad!!

I've had the eerie experience of close yotes crying in the night. I was walking to a stand in Carmi, IL when my buddy's lights passed across the field I was hunting. Instantly a pack of yotes sounded off and man did it seem close. I shot up that tree in about 2.2 and even went up 10' higher than I was supposed to. J/K. But I did get up there a lot faster. I had never heard them so close before.

Another thing, when mentioning wild dogs, is a little boy who played on the Akin Grade school basketball team was attacked and killed by a pack of wild dogs as he rode his bike from school one day. This happened about 20 years ago but it did happen. Akin is a very rural community but a nice quiet town to live in. I know they still have his basketball jersey hanging in the trophy case at the school. Sad. The locals did get together that same night and shot and killed the entire pack along with any wild dogs and yotes they saw. A lot of people still shoot any stray dogs they see in the area and arguments have come up about shooting dogs that just got off their leashes.

had this exact thing happen to me last year during bow season. Climbed down that evening and was getting my bow off the string and heard something run up behind me and stop about 20 yards. I got my light out and put it on the yote and he didnt run, i make noise with my feet and then i started walking towards it and it took up. Just like he said i got back to the truck that night pretty fast.. Going out in the morning to try and call some coyotes up to get alittle pay back

Closest thing I've had was about 10 years ago when my family had two labs. I heard the dogs start barking in the middle of the day and there were 6 yotes surrounding the two dogs. I grabbed a golf club that was sitting by the door and ran out there. They yotes left but they weren't in a hurry and they did stop about 100 yards out in the field when I quit yelling. I had to start running at them again to get them to take off. It seems like the more human contact they have the less scared they are for sure.

Heck I even shot one out of a pack of three with the 3006 six and the other two ran about 100 yards and stopped and I got a second one.
