western NY bowhunter
Anyone out there planning on hunting some NY birds this fall? I couldn't be more pumped right now...I saw 22 longbeards picking out in a field on a farm that I hunt near my house this morning! Too bad we gotta wait til Oct. 20 to hunt them here in region 8. maytom
I would be, except that our Fall season starts on October 20th??? Geezzeee, that's into the bowseason around here!!! I sure wish that the DEC would change that "stupid" start date to the October 1st like the rest of the state!! This way here we could get in almost three weeks of fall turkey hunting in "BEFORE" the fall bowseason starts!! So as it is right now, I pass on it every single year!! western NY bowhunter
I couldn't agree more!!! There's no reason why our season here in regions 8 and 9 shouldn't open on Oct. 1st (should be 2 bird areas as well). I sure wish that they'd get their heads outta their butts and change it. Adjam5
My sons and I will be out there this weekend chasing birds in unit 3H. Dang...that bites about having to wait until October 20th. Anyone know why that is? Anyone e mail a DEC biologist? Unless there is some wild reason why, I cannot see the difference in birds in the lower or eastern part of the state. DEC has made some BIG changes( youth seasons/bear firearm starting earlier) as of late and I think with the proper campaign, you guys out there might be able to get things changed. Its not like the rut. It takes one e mail to get the ball rolling. How bad do you want it?
NYBowhunter71
I would except Long Island doesn't have a season yet. I have seen tons of tracks and some BIG turkeys out here. I have heard that we are going to get season soon. I have heard as late as 2010.
Turkeygirl
I'll be hunting them for sure! End of summer saw a nice flock of youngins on the property I hunt...turkeys seem to be coming back. I think it will be a good fall harvest. Something to the effect that they "THINK" it would have an adverse effect of the turkey populations???? Last I knew, they do work for the sportsmen in the state? Maybe if more people would e-mail them?
Adjam5
From what I understand, the DEC commish can change any laws at any time pertaining to anything other that big game laws. Big game laws need to be changed by state legislators. A letter/email writing campaign could have some teeth, if you get enough people to write. You could count on me to help out. Thats funny because Regions 8 and 9 contain several of the premier turkey hunting counties in terms of harvest numbers in the entire state...particularly Cattauragus and Chautaqua in Region 9.
