wtnhunt
Have seen deer do a lot of things over the years, seems every year see something different and it makes it that much more interesting. Was a bit warmer yesterday afternoon than the forecast called for at 84, probably got closer to 90 again. Got to my afternoon stand looking over a rr soybean plot a bit later than I had planned, was probably about 5:10 by the time I was up in the stand. I called a few times with the knight and hale ez bleat about 5:20 or so. About 5:40 a young doe comes through on my left in the woods, a small fawn still in spots tags along behind. Both passed through in range walking along, but I opted to pass, holding out for a mature doe. They went on and went into the bottom. Watched them for a while, until they got to where I could not see them anymore, probably about 5:50. Thought they would come around to feed in the beans, but they never did. About 6:15, I hear and explosion of water in the hardwoods in the bottom that is underwater. Heard what I thought might have been a growl sound somewhere right before the splashing in the water. The doe and fawn burst out of the woods ran in circles in the bottom back into the water a couple times, then right in front of me through the woods and some pretty thick brush, the doe chasing the little fawn around the entire time. That went on for a few minutes. Have seen fawns chase around and play plenty of times and seen does chase their fawns before, but never this hard through thick junk and water like this. Somewhere in the midst of all this several turkeys flew up to the roost about 65 yards behind me, they made quite a bit of noise. Last place I saw the doe and fawn, they went through about the same way they first came out of and went from my right to left. Then I looked back towards the bottom as I heard more movement in the water again and saw another young doe, no way it could have been the doe that had been with the fawn, just was not enough time for her to have circled around and ended up out in front of me. This doe had her attention focused seemingly on the woods behind me. She stood in the water off to my right and blew a few times, she was about 60 or so yards out. There was not much wind, but she was on my downwind side. The thermacell was on and I was standing, but was still. She never looked up, never looked at me, so I dont think she ever pinpointed me. Really dont know if she knew something was different or what, but she made her way around to the same trail the other two went away from me on and she blew a few times over there along the way too, and she did seem to be try to catch wind of something, but she was upwind of me then. Really kind of wonder if it was me, or the call, the turkeys, or something else that had this doe wigged out. Being that she never looked up at me, really dont think she winded me. Anyone got any thoughts on why this youg doe was acting spooky?

wtnhunt
Maybe one of those dogs were back behind you somewhere Got pics of some just last week on one cam:(, but dont think that was what it was about. It's fun just being there, and watching the action...eh:cool: Can certainly have a successful hunt without killing anything, and experiences like those with the doe and fawn yesterday are what keeps you going back. buckee
Can certainly have a successful hunt without killing anything, and experiences like those with the doe and fawn yesterday are what keeps you going back. Ain't that the truth. If I see only one deer, or a few little birds up close, or a flock of geese fly over, or countless other wildlife, I consider my hunt successful I can't wait to get back out there. beagleboy
I have no explanation for what happened to you and you didn't get to see a buck, but at least you had some action to pass some time. There are times I don't even see a bird. Good luck to you
rhine16
No clue on why she was acting spooky, but it sounds like you had a pretty good evening.
Abear
Sounds like a exciting hunt. And she might have been just worked up or caught a glimpse of something she didn't like but didn't know what it was.
