wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Using a sony handycam mini dv here, been pretty happy with it.
Guest baerbucks005
When looking at video cameras, you have to decide whether you want to actually do something with footage you get such as try to sell them possibly. If you are looking to video hunts for fun most of the newer mini dv camcorders work just fine and have decent quality. I started off using a sony handycam Hi 8 which really wasnt very good quality, they really dont even sell these cameras anymore. I then went to a sony handycam mini dv, the quality is much better but it still doesnt have the best quality in low light conditions, which when hunting is when you will get most of your opportunities. Just recently a buddy and I bought the Sony DSR-PD170, which is a professional video camera, this camera is unbelievable but is a little more pricey. When looking at video camera, if you look at the lux, this is what tells you how well it is in lowlight conditions. The lower the lux, the better. If you are looking for something under $1000, you wont be able to find something with a great lux but i'm sure you can find something that is decent. I would recommend a sony that uses mini dv tapes. Hopefully that is somewhat helpful, Good Luck!

lungbuster12point06
Any Panasonic 3CCD with a high OPTICAL zoom lens.........digital zoom is worthless so don't let that be a deciding factor.........also mini-dv is the way to go , mini dvd is very time consuming to get captured for editing..........hard drive might be an option, but I would not recommend it for a camera in the $1000 or less range..........I have used a Panasonic gs120 the past two seasons and had great results with it..........I recently upgraded to a Panasonic DVX100 which is a pro-sumer camera and the picture quality is great, but the price tag is way over $1000:)......... If your interested some of the GS120 footage can be veiwed on my website: http://www.pronghornproduction.com/
