ilhnter
The opening evening of the Illinois bow season was not a good one for me and my family. Was up in a tree along the edge of a field that leads down to a bean field. The edge of the woods is full of white oaks and there are a ton of nuts. Well around 5:15 i picked up movement in the field about 75 yds away. It was three mature does and 2 yearlings. they finally started down the fence and got to within about 15yds eating white oaks. Finally one of the mature does stepped out and I put my 20 yd pin right behind her shoulder and i let it fly. When i released, i could tell the shot was high, but right on its mark behind the shoulder. I saw and heard it hit, and she turned and kicked and ran off over the hill out of site. After the deer left the field I climbed down and looked at my arrow and NO BLOOD. The arrow had a few pieces of meat on it, but no blood what so ever. I must have just barely clipped her back or I hit just under the spine, but not low enough to hit vitals. Either way she's still running around the farm somewhere. And to make things worse my dad was sitting maybe 100 yds from me and he also missed a doe. Not a good opening day, but it was exciting to see and have deer around the stand. We both saw nine deer a piece and had some deer at very close ranges. The deer he saw were also picking up white oaks. I can't hunt again until wednesday, but I'll be in one of those two stands. Sam16
Sorry to hear about the misses, but at least both does are still alive and well. Sounds like you are onto them pretty well anyways, good luck the rest of the way. It may seem bad, but im sure many people had worse days... Abear
That isn't the best start in the world but you have to think positively you saw nine deer and the one you shot probaly is still running around

wtnhunt
How far did you continue to look? Sometimes deer do not always bleed right away. Think I would have followed up the direction she went for a good ways. Too bad about your dad missing, happens to us all at some time. deerslayer79
Don't feel bad illhunter,I shot a hefier of a doe Sat. evening.perfect broadside shot at 25yds,double lung with 100% pass through.I saw her fall on the edge of the beanfeild about 60yds away,I waited 10mins before clibing down the tree in my climber I caught movement about half way down and looked and it was the doe scrambling into the woods.I proceeded to track her on my hands and knees,It was really thick, and lost blood about 75yds in the woods.POOF,gone like yesterday,I looked for 3hrs and no doe.I was really depressed, good shot on a big doe and it was nowwhere to be found. Bowtech_archer07
Sorry to hear about the bad luck, but better than my bad luck last year on opening day. I missed a 160+ buck at 25 yds.. I was absolutely sick. I can't make it out till Friday this year either cause of school. Good luck on Wed!!!
ilhnter
Yea, definately wasn't the worst evening ever or anything like that, but just drives me crazy. Opening day and the deer are doing exactly what you want them to do and then you miss. could have been worse, but still a dissapointing start to the season. Ohh well it was nice to finally get up in a tree and see deer. The best part of it all is it was only the first day, still have a long way to go. good luck everyone!!
