Dukey
I am looking into buying a trail cam but don't have the money to buy a Cuddeback. I was wondering what you guys would reccomend. I want to spend between $150-250. Thanks.
MUDRUNNER
I have the new Moultrie D40 and am pretty impressed with it.The trigger speed is real good.I have a few pics of deer that are actually running by the camera and it still got them before they left the frame. The flash is great and gets out there a ways and the battery life is pretty decent.Mine was $99,but they do have a infared model that's a few bucks more if you don't want a flash camera. rhine16
I have a Stealth Cam. Cant tell you what model it is right now, but it has great battery life.
wtnhunt
Could build a decent hombrew for that. All I will have from here on. Leaf river cams are good, but a little beyond that price range.
Guest Wackmaster17
I accually own a Stealth Cam and two Wildview trail cameras. The Wildview trail cams are around $100 and I think they are great.
arrow32
Its a bit more than your price range but think it would be worth saving up a little extra money and getting a great cam. Go Leaf River.
RangerClay
I have just two words for you. LEAF RIVER! I got one from KTMMike here on the forums and I loooooove it! If you do a search, you will find dozens of threads about the lousy customer service at Cuddeback.
Brad6639
What I would do is take that same 150-200 bucks and buy 4 or 5 stealth cams (the 35 mil versions) that are around 40 each. If you have several cams out, your more likely to pattern them easier. Yeah film developing isnt cheap, but the camera is soo much cheaper that youll still be cheaper and have your entire property covered. Im not sure but when the digitals first came out, they said their quality wasnt good on the cheaper cams, Im not sure if thats still the case but Id be leary of real cheap digitals still. First of all a digital will pay for itself in a very short time frame if you figure in processing and film costs. We ran a stealth cam for a couple years and had about a roll a week we were going through, at around $4-5 per roll processing and film costs you can do the math for yourself. Secondly digitals can and will give as good if not better pic quality than the cheap 35 mm cams. The stealth cam will not give the same quality of pics that I get from my 4.1 mp homebrew cams, NO WAY. With whatever you get, I would not go film as it would end up costing you more in probably less than a years time than what it would cost you for a couple decent digital cams. The new moultries are supposed to be better and supposed to be competitive with the performance of homebrew setups, but I am not so sure, and I have not had any first hand experience with them to say good bad or otherwise. Might check out some reviews at http://www.chasingame.com/, and see what they have to say.
Brad6639
Ive had nothing but crystal clear pics out of my stealth cams, even at long distance. Ive seen way more inferior images out of digitals than out of films, and if you buy 3 or 4 digitals, your looking at 900-1200 bucks for 3 or 4 cams, where as I would have 120. The digitals could break before you ever recovered your money. I am not saying they are junk, im just saying there are cheaper options that would put several cams out rather than just one. Guest bow_hunter101
I have been very satisfied with my Stealth Cam. I bought it 3 years ago and it never leaks water, the batteries last forever, and it take excellent pictures.
wtnhunt
Brad, think about it this way, how many rolls of film in a year do you run through your stealth cam, maybe 20-25? Ran 50 through mine the first year, second year had issues with the stealth cam and did not run as many through it, but ended up probably close to 100 rolls of film before that cam finally bit the dust. At $4 per roll minimum for processing and the cost of the film that is $80-$100 in just one year. The moultrie 4 mp digital only runs $100, the cam pays for itself rather quickly. Not only that you do not have to wait for processing. Swap a card and pop it in the computer and it is there, much more convenient. My stealth cam took decent pics, but I said it before and will say it again, they were not of the same quality I get from my 4 mp sony homebrew units. MUDRUNNER
Yea,for $250 a guy could get two of the Moultries and SD cards and take over 3000 pics.I've put about 12 rolls of film through my second 35MM Stealth and only about 20% of the pics have anything on them. Brad6639
When I have mine out I go through 5 or 6 a year per cam. I dont set up where I get a pics of everything that walks by, I am ussually on trails where I excpect to see bucks. Whats to say these 300 dollar cams wont break before they pay themself off? They are digital, electronic things do funny things. Im not saying they are bad, Im just saying unless your taking a pile of pics a year, Id rather have multiple cams vs just the one.
