Effective Bow Range

What distance does evereybody feel comfortable shooting at with a bow? I would take a shot up to 40 yards because that's the maximum range I practice at on a regular basis and would feel comfortable shooting at a deer. I practice up to 60 yards, but probably wouldn't take a shot at a deer from that range. Just curious to hear everyone else's opinion.

When I'm out practicing, which is pretty often, I will shoot out to 60,70 and sometimes out to 80 yards...

The reason for doing this is that it builds up my confidence level for those shots that are 40 or 50 yards...

But here where I hunt a 30 yard shot is all your going to get due to the thick timber. But I wouldn't pass on a 50 yard shot if it was offered to me...

For me, 25 yards is my max shooting distance at the moment. I just don't feel comfortable past that with the draw weight I'm shooting. Next year if I can get my draw weight up to #50 I'll probably then start considering upping that number to 35 yards, if it feels comfortable.

Like a lot of you I practice out ot 50-60 yards, but I can't see me shooting at an animal that far away, regardless of my proficiency. It doesn't make me comfortable knowing how small the margin for error is and and how long that 50 yard shot is hanging in the air. That deer could move and make a perfect 50 yard shot into a gut hit nightmare no matter how perfectly I do my part. Not knocking those who feel comfy with the idea, but I just don't like the idea of that deer taking another step forward and hearing a hollow sound when the arrow strikes back behind mid-ships.

25 - 30. You can practice all you want at 40 -60 yards (as I do), however, your practice target will never move and will always be at the same angle. There are too many variables when shooting a deer. I am not sure I can ever remember a deer standing perectly broadside at an exact know distance when I have taken a shot. I have unfortunately lost 2 deer and that is the worst feeling.

good luck to all

That would make any bow hunter sick to their stomach!

20-25 yards is where I am comfortable...35 yards max. I hunt all woods, no fields, and usually I am in the real thick stuff so anything over 25 yards is out of the question anyway.

Plus, I'm really not a big fan of wounding a deer, and my mentality has always been after 20-25 yards or so there are a lot of things that can go wrong on a shot, some in your control, some not, and I'm just not real comfortable shooting past that at a live target unless I have too.

Well i don't normally shoot out past 30 yrds. But I do shoot a hundred arrows a day and all the way out to 60 and feel really comfortable. I shot a doe last year at 62 yrds, but the situation was absolutely perfect. No matter what distance it's at I will'nt take the shot unless I know it's 100% ethical and is going to be absolutely fatal.
