Jorden
Hey guys here are some pictures of a buck I have on my property with an antler deformity. I want yur opinion on whether you think this is a result of him smashing or banging his antler against something or the result of a perminant injury and his antler will always grow like that. Do you think I should shoot him if I get the opportunity?
buckee
First off...Welcome to the RealTree Forums. It's up to you really, on whether to shoot him or not. My guess is, he is "not" a non-typical, and the antler malformation is caused from an injury on his right side. He's going to look a lot nicer next year, but he is definitely unique this year. wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Guess whether or not I would shoot the deer in your pics would depend on what else I knew was in the area. Think that malformation in those antlers is likely a result of the antlers being bumped somewhere along the way while they were growing, that is just my opinion anyways. Hoyt03
I think if you let him go he will be alot nicer next year and that other side will probably be normal
Turkeygirl
It's your choice. Me...if he came by my stand, he'd be in my car.
Hoosierbuck
It is unique, but he isn't apparently suffering from it, and he's a younger buck. Those things make me think that I would want to try to hang my tag on an older buck, and see what he turns into. That's my call based on what I would do if I saw him in my hunting areas, with all the variables that entails. You have to make your own call...and as long as you are happy with whatever the result, then it was the right decision. Good luck to you. indianaboy
He probably damaged his pedical or something like that. There is nothing wrong with him at all. If you dont mind shooting 1 1/2 old deer then when you see him next whack him!!
Tominator
That one walks if he comes by me.
Hardwood_HD
i might shoot him because hes unique, but on the other hand hes got some growing to do as well and would most likely be normal next yr
Guest slayabuck12
i think that i would let him walk, even though he is unique his still young.
Guest adrenaline_junky
Welcome to the RT forums. In my personal opinion i would let him go, he looks like a younger buck thats still got some good growing to do. It's up to you though. Go by the standards you have set for yourself on buck not what other people tell you. That's just my opinion. Good Luck this season.
Guest nywhitetail9339
what state was this picture taken. it looks like you need a big food plot to get some weight on that deer before you shoot him but the rack is very cool
arrow32
Welcome to the forums. Just depends on where you hunt. Around here I'd let him walk. But that wierd gear might want me to shoot him. Its up to you if no one else will Í'd let him hang around till next year.
johnf
Welcome to the forums. Like the other guys said, he's young. I can't see any injurys to his body and he seems to be carrying himself ok so I would guess that it will grow back normall next year. If you want that wacky looking rack go for it. If not, let him walk and have a bigger more typical deer next year.
Guest Wackmaster17
I agree with the a lot of the other guys on this one. I think the deer is to young and I would personally let him grew for at least 2 years before I would take a shot a him. But if he would have the same deformation in his rack next year and it was making him suffer, I would take him out of the herd. It is totally your choice on what you do, but just remember that he is a young deer.

PotashRLS
He probably damaged his pedical or something like that. There is nothing wrong with him at all. If you dont mind shooting 1 1/2 old deer then when you see him next whack him!! I agree that it looks as if he damaged his pedical. Zooming in on the picture makes it appear the antler pedical is deformed and more horizontal than vertical. If this is true, his left side will always be unusual. We picked up a roadkill buck that is nearly identical to your buck. He was a typical 2 1/2 basic half of an 8pt on the right and one large downward swooping mainbeam on his left. We boiled out the skull for a mount and it clearly showed the damage to the pedical. It was cool. I bet your buck would continue to grow from year to year, but the left side will most likely be deformed.
