Ok, guys, got a girly question.Hope someone here can help me with making a scent ellimination soap. I make a lot of bath, body and soap products, but it never really dawned on me to make a hunters soap. My problem is, I am not sure what type of essential oils to use for masking human scent. I found a recipe using birch bark and oak bark and oakmoss eo. There are even oils out there that are dirt scented. I figured just an unscented soap would be fine, bit I now know there is more to it. So if anyone has some hints, please speak up.

Id just buy a bottle of the hs scent away liquid soap and be done with it, I hunt a lot and 1 bottle will typically last me a season. I figure by the time I buy all the ingrediants, it would be cheaper to just buy the soap that I know works. Im all for saving money so if you need a scent eliminating spray (scent away or scent killer type spray), heres how to make a super cheap and effective recipe.

Take two pounds of baking soda and dump in a large mixing bowl (I prefer Arm and hammer, its about 2 bucks for the two boxes)

take 32 ounces of hydrogen peroxide and mix in with the baking soda(about a dollar)

take 1 ounce of scent free liquid soap (I just use my hs scent away liquid soap), and mix with the rest of the mixture.

Take 1 gallon of distilled water and mix in with the mixture. Stire heavily until the mixture disolves. Then let it sit for a week and stir every day for 3 or 4 minutes. A lot of the baking soda will settle at the bottom, but this is normal. Then after a week, I bottle it and use it as needed. The only bad thing with this mixture is it does leave a lot of white residue, but it washes right out and to me is worht it when you figure you can make a gallon and a half for less than 5 bucks.

Oh wow...I get to answer a question with my first post! lol!

I also make soaps, and what I do for hunters is a simple, unscented soap. Just be sure that you don't have any heavily scented oils (unrefined cocoa, for instance) or additives in the recipe, and you should be fine. I've also heard about people using anise to mask scent, but I've not tried it, nor have I had it requested. I shouldn't even mention this, but I've heard of people adding doe urine at trace...ugh!! I'll be passing on that one! ;-P

I've been thinking lately that it might be interesting to try an essential oil (not a synthetic FO) that is common to the area that the hunter will be in...balsam, cedar, etc. Right now, all of my "woodsy" soaps include synthetic FO's along with the EO's, so I don't think I'd suggest them to anyone for hunting. I have to imagine, though, that a staight balsam soap would not be all that bad.

Another thing I like to keep in mind is that the folks using your soaps are going to be exposing their skin to some harsh elements. Sooo, although it's the last thing a rough and tumble backwoods boy is going to think to ask for, you want to be sure it's a very moisturizing, mild bar!

Oh yeah... and lastly,be sure not to cure it next to your gramma's favorite lilac soap!! :D

Have a good one!
