pointing_dogs_rule
Hi Guys: I am going to try deer hunting in Iowa (with a gun) for the first time this year (after 17 years of bow and muzzleloader). All my shotguns are o/u or nicer types that I just use for trap/ sporting clays/ or pheasant hunting. Can any of you give a recommendation for a nice "slug gun" that shoots accurate. I am not use to pumps and have "short stroked" them when I have borrowed them so I would like to stayed away from them. I was looking at semi-autos (charles daly or remington) with a plastic stock. Besides what I stated, what would be a semi-auto that would get the job done. Gauge, length, rifled or smooth??? Anything else?? Also, please tell me WHY YOU LIKE YOUR RECOMMENDATION. Thanks in advance good luck to all the dog
Tominator
I think the Remington would suit you fine. I have the 870 (pump), but I have buddies with the 1100 rifled barrel, and they are very accurate guns for the money. Go with a 12 gauge, the kinetic energy and down range performance is tough to beat.
mehunter
Remington 1100 with a rifled barrel is a hard combo to beat.

johnf
If you're getting it to exclusively slug hunt with I would go with the riffled barrel for sure. Remingtons make some really good guns. I would go with the 1100 or 11-87.
Guest Hunter36
I hunt in Minnesota in a zone where all we can use are slug guns. The six people in our party shoot 870s (Pumps). You can get them with the slug barrel which I have. They shoot great. I would definately get a gun as soon as possible. Get a good scope put on that bad boy. A friend at school purchased the Remington 11-87 sportsman deer gun (semi-auto) last year I shot it and it felt great. Plus they have a great scope mount built onto the barrel. So if your looking for an autoloader thats the one I suggest. Shoot different slugs and see what shoots best. Dont be afraid to reach out and touch'em. Shooting a well set up shotgun will allow you to shoot well beyond 100 yrds. And, 200 aint unheard of if you practice and have the right setup. Good luck in Iowa...shoot straight! pointing_dogs_rule
thanks for all of your replys. Seems the remington 1100 is what I will look at first. good luck to all the dog
MUDRUNNER
I'm not sure Charles Daily makes a slug gun.The Remington 1100 would be a great choice for a semi auto.A riflrd barrel with sabot slugs would be the most accurate, especially at longer ranges, and if you plan on shooting past 80 yards or so I would recommend a low-medium power scope. You might also check into the H&R Slugster. It's a single shot, and from what I hear it's a great gun and very affordable. Abear
The 870 is is a very good 1 2 combo. I shoot a winchester 1200 with a smoothbore barrel on and its extremely accurate..
beagleboy
I love to shoot my Remington 11-87. It shoots 2 3/4 and 3in shells. I use a cantilever scope mount with a fully rifled barrel. It about 20"-21" inches with a Leopold shotgun scope. It patterns awesome. Awesome knockdown power and not much recoil. I've shot deer out to 90yds but could definately kill out to 125yds. Awesome shotgun. I switch barrels and use a rem barrel with turkey choke to hunt turkey. It's versatile and not too expensive. Good gun for the money. NY_Bowhunter14
i have a Remington 870 with a rifled barrel. I like it but the slugs are over $13 for just 5 slugs... if you go with remington, dont get the rifled barrel, to me it isnt worth all the extra $$$ u spend... VABuckSlayer
Definately get the rifled barrel. I have a Remington 1100 that is 42 years old. However I've bought a new barrel and put a synthetic stock and forarm on it. I also bought a rifled slug barrel with the cantilever scope mount for it. Man it's awesome. I shoot Lightfield slugs with it and have taken deer with it out to 100 yards with no problem. The fact that you can change the barrels is great because I use it for waterfowl as well as turkey. Definately the way to go in my opinion. Eric

RangerClay
Remington 1100 with a rifled barrel is a hard combo to beat. I have been using my 16 gauge 1100 ever since my first opening day in 1981. It is a rugged, hard working stotgun that cannot be beat. I highly recommend it. MichiganHunter
Lots of good options out there, I have a Mossberg 695, it'a a bolt action slug gun, and i LOVE IT, i have shot 870's, 1187's, single shots, and none of them have been as accurate as this gun, My 695 holds a 2 1/5 inch to less pattern at 150 yards with remington Copper Solids, i have a 1.5x4.5 and i have no prob takin deer from up in my face to 175 yard(my longest shot), I know there are some really accurate singles out there but they are just that a single the 695 is a 3 round mag. I have over under sights so if i get a running deer i can take a quick shot....and it should only run you about the same price as a good single.....It's a great gun and i love it and i know it would be a great gun for ya....let us know what u get. nativetexan
I'm glad this came up because I was about to post a question. I have an 870 wingmaster 12ga. smooth bore and have never slug hunted for deer. Here in Jersey I wanted to be able to slug hunt during the firearms season and was contemplating buying a slug gun with rifled barrel etc. Is it ok to shoot a slug out of the gun I have? I don't know much about slugs at all because I have never had a need for them. Most of the time I hunted in Texas where I used a .243. Can I buy just a rifled barrel for my gun? I know I can buy a slug gun for cheap, but if I can just buy a barrel I would rather do that than deal with the headache of buying a gun in Jersey. Guest bigalt78
seriously i have a h and r single shot 12 gauge with a rifled barrel the name of the gun is the pardner tracker 2 and it cost one hundred and fourty dollars and this thing is ridiculous. right out of the box it is dead nuts. i dont use scopes and i have shot deer at 120 to 130 yards with this gun. i would reccomend this gun to anyone. also h and r has a 12 gauge rifled barrel single shot slug gun with a bull barrel. this gun is very nice it will be my next purchase. this one comes drilled and tapped and ready for a scope. this gun has the bull barrel which makes it very heavy and it'll have hardly no kick at all but the first one i mentioned does kick an awful lot but it is the best gun for the money in my opinion for a slug gun. the second gun cost 250. and if you do buy the first one i talked about i would reccomend shooting 2 3/4 hybred exp light field sabbot slug out of that gun
