Deb
A friend and I were out at the stand at 6am sunday ( 2 stands in one tree). We're just chillin' waiting for daylight and I hear 'someone' rattling. Couple of light tickles( I'm thinking that this fool is way too early for this stuff) and then some more serious rattling starts up. I whisper to my friend (non-hunter, but loves going out) that there is some fool out there or we have some bucks fighting the woods just a 100 yard way. Well, the 'rattling' keeps up for 15 minutes! As the bucks are fighting, a deer comes very close to the stand ( it's still dark and we don't see it approach). The deer blows at us and we see it wave at us and all sparing stops. My friend catches a glimse of antlers as the buck bolts off. Well we figure the buck spotted my friend's WHITE socks. We don't think we were scented, we were very anal about scent control. Needless to say, there will no more white socks! And there is now a skirt around that stand! As hot as it was, I couldn't help but go back out in the evening. Wind was going every-freeking-way and I'm thinking that I am sooo messing up this spot, but I stay. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to stay out of this stand for a week or two. And I will give the stand a break, but I did have a decent buck come out at sunset and walk down a hedge row in front of my stand( about 75 yards) and eventually cut over into the next field. Guess I didn't bugger the stand too badly. I am so pumped about this stand. Out three times I have seen deer three times. Not quite in bow range, yet. But if not now, they will in range for slug season!
Guest Andrea
That's awesome Deb. Nothing like the sound and sights of deer in the fall to get the old heart pumping. I can't wait to get out there. Good luck with that stand. Sounds like it's a good one.
Deb
I guess maybe it's not too early to rattle like I thought it was. The rut usually hits around the end of the first week of Nov. Is it too early for Ohio? Maybe I'm the one that's the fool for not trying it.
cinch314
I always try to do a little gentle sparring with my rattles and soft bleats to make them curious about what is going on in my neck of the woods.
