bowin_in_illinois
Well...we seemed doomed from the start. Temps in the low 90's, but we went out anyway. Saturday morning.....saw nothing. Saturday evening......saw nothing. Sunday morning........saw nothing. Sunday evening....... .......Well, legal shooting ended at 7pm. We still hadn't seen anything, and at 6:55 I told her we only had 5 minutes left, and then told her I was sorry we hadn't seen any deer...and no sooner had those words left my mouth when I caught movement to my left. There she was...a nice doe. I told Ellie to get ready, and to go through her routine...make sure she takes the safety off...etc. I keep looking at the time...6:56...6:57...6:58...with 2 minutes left the doe is finally in front of her, it is about a 20 yd. shot. ...she missed. I think her nerves got the best of her...but it doesn't matter. What matters was the excitement she felt. I said..."now you see why I put in the time, and sit for hours on end...for that feeling right there!" Obviously she wished she could get a second chance at that shot...but I think she learned from it...and now she knows a little better what to expect, and can prepare for it. here is a couple of pics.... This is "her view" Here is a pic I took looking down at her from my stand.
wtnhunt
Too bad the weather and deer were not more cooperative, but at least she did get a shot. Kind of surprised your youth hunt is so early, ours here is at about the best possible time it could be, the end of October.
MUDRUNNER
The weather was awefull for deer hunting over the weekend. At least she got a crack at one and it sounds like she enjoyed herself. A friend of mine took his boy out and he missed a little buck Saturday morning. It happens to everybody. She'll get 'em next time.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Good lesson learned, none the less. I always have mixed feelings when I see or hear about a kid getting a trophy class buck on their very first hunt. Unless the adults there do everything exactly right, that kid will probably come away from the experience with the wrong attitude about hunting.
