Guest Andrea
Is chivalry dead? Answer these: 1. Do you open doors for women, even total strangers? 2. Do you offer to carry heavy items for a woman, even if you don't know her? 3. Do you open the car door for your wife? Girlfriend? 4. Do you stop when you see a woman on the side of the road with a flat tire? Just wondering. Trying to teach my boys these things even at this age. What's your thoughts? arrow32
Will say yes to the first three. Just is something I came a costum to doing out of kindness not really something I was taught just what I saw other people do when I was younger. The fourth one I have never had happen to me yet Andrea so no.

arrow32
This is close enough to the last one a lady was broke down in the middle of the road and no one was helping her just driving around so I pulled over and pushed her up into a drive. I''m such a good kid.
Hoosierbuck
1) If they are in reasonable proximity to the door, yes. 2) If it is obvious they are unable to do it (standing there looking at it) or are really struggling. Have to be careful not to sound condescending when you offer, though, if you don't know her. "May I?" not "Let Daddy get that for you toots" 3) When I can-usually wrangling 1-2 out of 3 kids... 4) If it's a woman alone, elderly people, or a woman with kids-yes, but again, offer and let her invite you. They are usually scared of strangers. I offer a cell phone or assistance, and introduce myself first, and tell her where I work or what town I live in, to put her at ease. You need to be careful yourself, too, that she is not just bait for some jerk to carjack you or something. HB

MCH
Unfortunately, yes to all four. Actually changed a flat for a lady a little over a month ago. Was raised by a single mother, so I really didn't have a say in the matter.

buckee
1. Do you open doors for women, even total strangers? I open the door and hold it open for both men and women, just to be polite. 2. Do you offer to carry heavy items for a woman, even if you don't know her? Sometimes, but younger woman think you're weird if you offer to help in any way. With older folks,( male and female), I'll offer if I see they are struggling, or just have too much to carry by themselves. 3. Do you open the car door for your wife? Girlfriend? Sometimes, not too often 4. Do you stop when you see a woman on the side of the road with a flat tire? I have, if I'm not in a hurry myself to get somewhere. Being respectful, polite, courteous, and helpful is something all parents should be teaching their kids. Teaching them by word only, is not enough. You have to teach them by example too. elkoholic
Chivalry - why? 1. If you can not open doors by yourself, maybe you should stay home. 2. If you can not lift it, then you should not have bought it. 3. See number 1 4. If you can not change a flat, maybe you should not drive. Exceptions can and will be made, but, overall I see no reason to treat the women in the world any different than men. Equal pay for equal work and all that. Women have manipulated men for thousands of years and men fall for their wiles every time. The cuter and curvier the woman. the dumber us men get. Many a man has fallen victim to a wink or gesture. Which brings me to a question for the women reading this; Have you ladies ever used the power of cleavage to get, or try to get, your way? Shaun_300
Yes to the first 3, haven't come across a lady with a flat tire yet, but if I wasn't in a rush to get somewhere I'd definetly help her out! I'm the opposite of Steve, I love mechanics and that's what I do for a living, so why not help someone out and make their day eh?
birdhunter39
yes to all 4 questions , it was how my parents raised their hosehold family , this past winter i shoveled two senior citizens drive and front walk , i couldn't accept any money no matter how hard they tried to pay me i said no thank you and walk away , the other day i was at a store and held 2 doors open for a 96 year old lady (she said her age when she thanked me ) she told me i was a dying breed of man , then i helped my next door neighbor by changing her tire , and said i couldn't accept any money , she asked why and i said that's the way my father raised his sons and it brought a tear to her eye . she asked where my father was now to thank him for raising his sons right and i replyed by saying he passed away 16 years a go . If asked I would, but do not make a habit of offering to carry large or heavy items for women I dont know. 3. Always open the car door for my wife. 4. Seems every time I see a woman stopped broke down or blown tire, I have my kids with me, and I am not a risk taker, you just never know in todays world. Very sad. RangerClay
1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Most of the time 4. I honestly cannot remember the last time I saw this. This is the age of cell phones and Triple A. 5. I'll add a couple more. One thing I will teach my boy is something my Dad taught me. When I walk down the sidewalk with my gal, I always walk on the outside. Second, in church when I stand up for communion, I always step back and let my wife go ahead of me. Tominator
Chivalry dead? Heck no, not with me. Absolutely yes to all of your questions. That stuff is just common courtesy IMHO. Surprised at some of these answers so far.
