cannot believe I missed

This morning a little after 9, I noticed out our back window that our cows, mainly the bull, kept watching something down the hill, and figured something was up. About 9:10 I saw what they were watching, a good sized yote stuck his head up at the bottom of the hill to the left of the pasture the cows are in just at the end of the area I keep mowed for the back yard. As quick as I could I grabbed my AR, bumped the mag in and drew back the slide and let it slam forward. I opened the sliding glass door and placed my hand on the door using it for a rest of sorts and propped the rifle there steady as possible. I could see his head and the top of his shoulders, but not all of his body over a little rise. I got on him fairly quickly, he was just about straight on facing me, slightly headed to the left, and squeezed while aiming at the center of his head and realized I had the safety still on. The yote looked right at me, and started to turn looking like he was going to turn around and head down the hill. Now I could see a little more of his body and had my crosshairs settled in right on the front of the shoulder. Realizing I had better make it quick, I flipped off the safety and kind of quickly squeezed again, the shot felt good. Dont think I pulled my shot, but guess in the rush to get the rifle out and get to a position to shoot it is possible that maybe I did pull it.

My 11 year old was watching out her window, and she said she was sure I hit him, because he jumped up, then went kind of side ways and took off hard. The cows watched and they looked in the direction down the hill towards an area in the gulley that has some thick nasty junk for a minute or two after the shot before they went back to feeding. My wife is out of town until Sunday, so I cannot get down there to look. Really not interested in finding the yote, but would sure like to know if I hit him. The shot was right at 100 yards, I had my crosshairs lined up right on the front of the shoulder. Shooting 55 grain ultramax soft points, the same round that I have been shooting from this rifle and getting good very groupings with. It was a bit of an awkward angle, body kind of facing me with a fairly hard angle. I looked a little and found no blood anywhere. Last yote I shot with this round, was out a little further, but he dropped within about 5 yards of where I shot him. Any chance the angle maybe did not get a pass through and he just did not bleed?
