Finally broke the ice

My Dad finally connected on a 160 lb, 7 pointer. He shot it last night, but wasn't exactly sure of his shot placement. So, we opted to wait until this morning. He called me at 3:45 am and said we need to go start looking because there was rain coming. By the time I got there (about a 30 min. drive) it had already started raining, so we decided to wait until first light. The neighbor (Dan)and his son(Nate) came to help us look. There wasn't much blood, because Dad figured he his the opposite side shoulder due to the quartering away shot. No exit hole. Nate (11 years old) ran across the first blood about 100 yds down the trail. We only found 3 spots of blood in the 150 to 200 yds the deer ran. But we found him. After finding the deer we found that Dad make a nice double lung shot. I guess the old man still has it. Nate got a big thank you from Dad and I, for his help. Now it's my turn.

Here's a couple pics of Dad and his buck.

Just a little update on this deer. While we were skinning this deer tonight we noticed something very odd. There was some extreme bloodshot throughout the deer. The area from about the last couple ribs to the hind quarter, we could see some separation of the hide from the ribcage and from the rump. Along with that some of the muscle was torn. The only conclusion we could come up with was that he must have been recently hit by a car. There is no braodhead that could have done all that damage, especially since it was a double lung hit. After seeing this I wish i would have had my camera along to get some pics of it. I've seen deer shot with rifles, shotguns and arrows and never seen this much bloodshot throughout the whole deer. Safice to say, we had a lot of waste. We managed to salvage about 60% to 70% of the meat. We were a bit disappointed but it's better than nothing. Hopefully we don't have that problem again.
