wildside
Have you ever fallen from a treestand and been saved by a safety harness? If so, how did it feel and how was it getting yourself down?
Guest bowhunter56
A few years back when they just had the belt around your waist, i had the belt around my waist and the tree, i was using an older model api, the climber and seat were not attached with a rope, i had reached the level i wanted, but steped too far back or toward the tree, and the seat/platform went to the ground, i was hanging there, the waist strap slid up arond my chest, i managed to get my legs arond the tree, and slowly worked my way down, it was tough but i made it. I had some discomfort around the chest area, i tied sticks together to get the climber part down, and went home, that was enough for one day. Today's safety harness are much better with a 4 point system, one still has to watch in case of a fall, that the blood is not cut off around the legs. Going up or down a tree, a safety harness is a must..
BuckNrut
Like '56, I had a "strap" a few years back. I was putting the bead on a doe and leaned too far. The first thought that went through my mind was "did I put my belt on?". The jolt to my abdominal area answerd the question. I was able to steady myself with a foot around the tree trunk, but that deer got away. I used the climbing stick to get back into the stand. The next day, same stand, I made a 30-yd running shot on a doe - with my pants down to my ankles!

Tominator
Yep. First year I got my full body harness. I was climbing a wet red oak, i.e. very slippery. The bottom part of my old API climber slipped, and I went down with it. Slammed my face into the tree (got a decent black eye out of it), but I only fell a foot or so. I got out of that tree and found one that wasn't so slick.

TreeStandBowHunter
No not yet but I want to be ready and make sure I am wearing one when it does happen;) A few years ago, I was cutting some branches off and I was only about 6 ft off the ground at the time but I fell off the climbing step and fell right on my back. I wasn't hurt but had I been any higher, it could of been ugly. I always wear a full body harness but that day I forgot it in my hunting bag and didn't feel like going back home for it. I learned my lesson although I wasn't hurt. I never go a foot up the tree without it now...even if I am only cutting branches 6 ft off the ground;)
LifeNRA
No not yet but I want to be ready and make sure I am wearing one when it does happen;) Same here! A friend that my wife works with, her husband fell and broke his back. He had no cell to call for help, and had to crawl back to his truck and drive him self home! Since then he now wears a full harness, like myself! I know of another who fell only wearing a belt, he too broke his back and now wears a full safety harness. Luckily they were able to live and hunt another day! Some people didn't have that luck and died! ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HARNESS WHEN YOUR FEET LEAVE THE GROUND!!! Bowtech_archer07
I wear one when i'm hunting, but have not fallen thankfully. I went on a rescue squad a few weeks ago where a guy was putting up a stand, fell from 15 ft. and broke his ankle. It broke in 3 places and fractured in 5 others. He was messed up pretty bad. The doctors told him that by the time they were done with him, he would practically have a new ankle.
Missilelock
Bad guy here Hate to be the only idiot in town, But i feel real comfortable in my api climber with the top half that wraps all the way arond me. Cant fall out if I fall asleep if i try:D:D. Anyway. never used one & dont plan to start now. Im a logger by trade. If i get killed in the woods its probably gona be by the tree falling on me , not me falling out of the tree :)

TreeStandBowHunter
If i get killed in the woods its probably gona be by the tree falling on me , not me falling out of the tree :) LOL:D Although I don't agree with you on the safety harness thing, that's funny right there:D My Brother-in-Law works at a lumber yard and he says the same thing:D...Me personally, I Think I would rather fall out of a tree than have one land on me too...especially a big tree;)
LifeNRA
Hate to be the only idiot in town Every Village has one! :D:D I dont mean to be mean, but you wear and use safety equipment while on the job right? Guest realtrhunter
I fell the first year that I started hunting, '03. Had the bottom fall out from under me on a climber I had from wal-mart. It felt about the same as when a parachute opens and you go from a free fall to almost a dead stop. I was using a full body harness. One thing that I learned that evening was to make sure your leg straps are tight, or the guys will be sore for a few days. wtnhunt
Have slipped and caught myself, with the help of the harness, but thankfully have never had a fall and had to rely on the harness to catch me.
OJR
Simple Solution! You know there is a very simple solution to all the problems with tree stands, harnesses, etc! DON'T USE THEM! Hunt from a ground blind and you won't have these problems at all!! I bet you will get just as many deer!
firefighter
Happened to me once,,,, when i first got my climber, the bottom fell out from under me, fell a couple of feet and the harnes caught me. ribs were a little sore. wrapped my legs around the tree, had to cut my harness and slowly climb down. After i rested for a minute, i used the bottom portion to climb up again, and bring everything down. needless to say i finished my day on the ground. shockwave
a friend of mine this past weekend had the bottom of his stand let loose, he was wearing a waist belt, it ended up slipping up his chest and cracking his sternum, luckily his son was hunting close enough and heard him yelling for help .. I switched to a full harness last year, hopefully i`ll never have to see how smart i was for buying it.
buckee
I've never fallen from my stand, but I do recall two times where I could have very easily, if I wasn't strapped in good.
