Guest WGABuck
Last Christmas I saw two bucks in my yard. I shot at a doe in my small woods area behind my home last year, but missed it. I bumped up a two year old buck about six times last year just walking into my woods. My woods are only about 100 yards wide, by about 60 yards deep, but the fence line is down, and there is a food plot about 50 yards farther. A neighbor installed the food plot, and there is a pond on his land about 200- 300 yards south, south east of my home. Beyond the food plot, is a valley area that joins a farmers field. Not fenced. Today, a guy I know came to my home, and said the neighbor across the street was awakened by his dog, and got a night scope on about 8 deer across the street in my front yard. They want to try to take one with crossbow, he tells me. There are nearby houses, along my driveway as my house is down a long drive between two other homes. He tells me these deer travel about a 5 mile pattern, and appear across the street at a garden, and up the road as well. Sometime about 3:30 am, and he says he wants me to sit out to see them. His excitement is noted, and I am aware of does, and a fawn. I have only seen the big buck last Christmas morning. He was dashing back into the woods across my front yard. And, there are two other smaller, younger bucks floating around. I set up two tree stands with 2x4's and platforms in the yoke of some good trees, and I really have not hunted in them at all. I shot at a doe from the base of one of them when she got up while I was leaving, I never even saw her, and then she moved on me when I got down. I shot behind her with tripleX. Our deer season opens in Georgia this weekend, 20th, and I am going to the range tomorrow afternoon. Then I will sit out all night, sleep Friday, and go to the lake to hunt most all day Saturday. But, I do not want to risk some accident, or some event on my land, or a neighbors land. I do not know the county law about firing at game on your own land. If there is law about shooting distance from buildings, in Georgia... If I could take these deer with my slugs, properly, to assure myself, and neighbors there was a controlled and placed shot, then I would feel more at ease with taking these deer. I think I will tell the guest, and other neighbor that they should not try this attempt. But, they can get access to the food plot to hunt off of my land, if they want to. Signed, Concerned.... wtnhunt
I do not know the county law about firing at game on your own land. If there is law about shooting distance from buildings, in Georgia... Dont know about GA law, here there is a law in regards to how close you are allowed to discharge a firearm to a building. Would be in your best interest to check your state regs or get in touch with your local wildlife officer and ask him/her.
brownie65
I agree with wtnhunt. Illinois has laws on how close you can be to a inhabitated dwelling while archery & shotgun hunting. The law also states that the distance is how close you can hunt to somebodys dwelling without their permission. I assume ( don't know this though) that you can hunt closer to a persons dwelling with their permission. If your ground is in the city limits then I would think you would have to check with the city to see what their laws are on it . If it is rural I would talk to a game warden or some official & see what the laws are. If it is legal then I would have to decide for myself if I felt it could be done safely. No deer is worth the price of any person. If you are comfortable with it (assuming it is legal) then figure out a game plan & go after him. I know several people that hunt small pieces on the edge of small towns & other small woodlots. None have ever had any problems, these areas can & do sometimes contain a nice buck. They are easy to run out for good though. As I said if it is legal & you are comfortable with it then go for it. If you are not good with it, then just enjoy watching the deer in your yard. Guest WGABuck
Well, I decided to try to tell the guy that he can access these deer via another route.. through the farmers land, on the back side of this food plot. the food plot is directly behind my house. And, the farmers land is north east of me.. up the same road I live on, and the guy knows this. So, He should go up there, and not bother me. The neighbor told a buddy, and the buddy had met me before. I don't want strange people walking in my yard either! I do not know of a county law here about shooting game near buildings. I know that the Corps of Engineers have regs about it and WMAs have regs about it. Our City is NO hunting, no discharge of firearms, and where I live in Unincorperated city... county law applies. Two houses up from me, a man has a firing range and shoots his pistols half the day. From a small town, thanks guys! .. WGAbuck
wtnhunt
I do not know of a county law here about shooting game near buildings. Like I said, I do not know about GA law, but I do know for certain that here that it is not legal to shoot a firearm within 100 yards of a visible dwelling without the owners permission.
