Guest realtrhunter
Have any of you every used a climbing belt and spikes to get into trees? The sameones that they use for climbing power poles and for tree care. I am getting pressured on public land and having to walk farther in and I am looking for a way to lighten what I have to carry in and to also be able to get into trees that have lower limbs. It would be to difficult or load to cut lower limbs. With a belt and spikes I could use two belts to get over limbs. What do you all think? johnf
I think the dangers of those things far outweigh the benifits. I know guys that use them, but I wouldn't.
woodshed
going up and even worse down in the dark would be very dangerous. Those guys use those in the day when they can see where every limb, soft spot, loose bark, etc.. is. I considered the same thing this year along with the tree saddle. I just couldn't justify it in my mind. Plus,,good ones are not cheap. Remember,,you get what you pay for. This is not an area to skimp. I would consider spending about the same for some climbing sticks from Lone Wolf. They are light, pack in clipped together and great for trees with irregularities. maytom
I have been using that climbing belt for years that comes with those "spurs", but I just bought that climbing belt only. It's the cat's PJ's when screwing in steps and hanging your "hang-on" stands!! Never tried those spurs, since I mainly just use screw in tree steps. mallard_drake85
as a forester, i have used these tree gaffs before. mind you, if you are not experienced, they can be hazardous. but they are light weight. invest in a good pair, not the cheap nock offs. look at the http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/drilldown_pages/view_category.asp?cat=225, buckingham and klein both make great gaffs. as for the actual climbing harness, weaver make a good one (found on that sight as well). some pros of the gaffs: quick, light weight some cons of the gaffs: hurt your shins (invest in the extra pads) above all, invest in a good rope! just my 3 cents mallard_drake85
