Fall opener tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the fall opener of turkey season in the southern zone of NY. I'm probably going to hunt the land here by home. A week and a half ago while squirrel hunting heard turkeys talking up a storm on some state land. The neighbors place an hour away I also saw some turkeys on.

So I'm going to hunt here at home where I got my spring jake. The farmer finally cut his corn so I would think they'll hit those fields, especially when it rains. I haven't heard or seen them yet when hunting. I'm wondering, if I've seen turkeys by certain fields, but they stop coming to them when the corn gets tall, do they "know" when it's been cut and come back?

I was also wondering if I should hunt with a decoy out? I've got a hen decoy.

I know they're around, saw the flock of youngins in late August. Some other adults around somewhere. Raining right now so when I get home later, I might walk a few fields to see where they are.

Good luck to anyone else hunting turkeys this weekend!

Well can't find my sticks for the decoy so may go decoyless. I went out tonight, didn't see any birds in the 3 fields I checked. Did find alot of tracks and feathers and poo between the old gravel pit and the cut corn field where I got my spring jake. After the rain this evening, I'd think they'll hit the fields tomorrow for good stuff to eat so my plan is to set up in that corn and wait em' out.

Got lucky this morning...

My cousin and I set up below a traditional roosting site on a hillside ridge. Spooked a bird outta the roost when we first got there. We set up and I started calling. After 20 minutes or so a hen starts yelping a ways down the hillside from us. We packed up and headed over that way. I got the boss hen fired up with my mouthcall and the next thing ya know there was a flock of 20 or so birds heading our way. They all started fighting and carrying on. I ended up shooting a nice fat hen at a little before 8:00. My cousin got all the action on video too which is pretty cool. He managed to get a quick shot off but failed to connect. Unfortunately they didn't scatter like I had hoped when I shot and we weren't able to call them back in.

Turkey hunting is just too fun...:D!

Now it time to concentration on bowhunting....
