Brad6639
Well the landowner where we hunt has been talking about getting a bigger rifle to hunt deer with, (he uses a 30-30), and so my dad and I decided to get him a 30-06 because he has let us hunt there for free for so long. I decided to give him my 710 because he only huunts a few days a year, and he isnt the greatest at cleaning like they need to be, so I figured this woudl be a simple gun and user friendly. I found a savage 111 fc something (packaged deal), that has a 3x9x40 scope and a clip. Now Ive always hunted with a 30-06 but Im thinking about leaning towards the .300 Win mag this time, because if I decide to hunt elk someday, it would be nice to have the flatter trajectory. Now, Im 5'11, 200 pounds, how much more recoil and muzzle blast are we talking if I upgrade? The 710 kicked like a mule because it was light and had a cheap buttpad. This one has a spongy recoil pad and weighs more. Anyone have any experiance with this gun, it is on sale for $319 this weekend, down from $379. From what Im told, savage makes a great gun for the price, but is it tue?

wtnhunt
The savage rifle is an accurate out of the box rifle. My wifes model 10 is a tackdriver. The scope in the package deal however will be functional at best. Hers came with a simmons 8 point scope, which I later replaced with a nikon buckmaster. Far as recoil and comparisons, think honestly for the versatility and cost efficiency of ammo I would personally lean towards the 30-06. Did a little checking on magnum factory loads here recently and it is significantly more than non magnums.
Strut10
Recoil's gonna depend on fit. Doesn't matter how big you are......recoil is tolerated by each individual shooter. My little sister shoots my .300 Mag Model 70 with zero complaint. I've not shot any of the Savage bolt guns, so I can't comment from 1st hand experience. If you're used to an '06 recoil, then the .300 Win Mag won't bother you.
RJJ
They are a good gun for the money. I have had a few of them and had pretty good luck with them. I always had the 30-06.
