razortec_hunter
ok today at 430 PM i shot a nice buck with my bow while still hunting (the buck was 20 yards), it was quartering away and it looked like i made a perfect shot i mean dead on. 2 hours later we start tracking we find blood everywhere and then we found one huge blood patch all the blood is frothy and bubbly so i know it's lung shot. BUT i followed the trail 345 yards down the edge of a cut bean field and then he jumped a fence back on to our property (i shot it on my neighbors) and then right after that fence jump there was a little patch of blood and now we cant find blood ANYWHERE!!! and trust me we looked. so where do u spose the deer went??????? i mean it was all lung blood BUT he went almost 400 yards!?!?!? how can a deer go 400 yards with an arrow through his lungs. i do have to say it wasn't a passthough the arrow IS still in the buck where ever he may be. i shot this buck 5 yards from where i took a shot at my doe 9 days earlier and missed. SO where do u think my buck went???? and i REALLY want to find it in the morning cuz 1 this will be my first "buck" (i have killed a doe though but not a buck) by bow AND 2 it's a nice buck. so please help me!!!!!!!! where did he go?!!? there is a big lake about 50 yards from that fence jump ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? please i'm going out in the morning!!! also will the meat be spoiled??? over night low is 49????? razortec_hunter
i know i have the same topic in deer hunting but i'm desperate
buckee
First off....No the meat won't spoil, it will be just fine. I'm will to bet, with all that blood initially, that he's not too far from the last sign you found. Get a friend or two, and do a grid search , looking for both blood, and scanning around for the deer. Many times a deer fatally wounded like that, will abruptly change direction, just before it expires. I've seen them just jump right off the trail, and drop on the way to cover, or sometimes they will even stop, and double back on their trail, and then jump off to the right or left. I wouldn't be surprised if you find it not too far away at all, but make sure you not only grid search ahead of where you last saw sign, but also back and off to the sides. ;) Good huntin and I'm hoping for the best for you. Guest bigalt78
yeah i agree with him when i shot my first buck it did the same exact thing and we brought my buddies two little brothers with us and it fell off the trail just about five yards or so.any time you jump a deer it seams like you'll get blood for a little while more and then boom there's no sign of blood at all i know how it feels. but i do agree with the guy who posted before me do a grid search. round up as many buddies as you can and walk as if you were rabbit hunting or another thing that works for me sometimes is go back to the last sign of blood and do a spiral motion and make the circles bigger and bigger and might help too but im not too sure on that one lol. well good luck i hope you find him. scrubhunter
I had the same thing happen to me two years ago. You said quartering away with no pass-through, that means you only got one lung allowing the buck to still be able to breathe. Give it a day and go back again. Hopefully you guys didn't bump him too far.
whttlbucksteve
You have good advise Good luck on finding him
Tominator
I DOUBLE lunged one a few years ago, and she went about 400 yards on a dead sprint. I'd say your deer is definitely down somewhere, Buckee gave some great advice. Good luck.
JDAWG
Whatever you do, don't give up. There is a lot of great advise. Take your time and look carefully. Good luck finding him.

peteski
The more people you can get together to search, the better chance you'll have of recovering that buck. Some states allow tracking dogs and actually give a list of people licensed to use them. Good luck.
razortec_hunter
well guys...... great advice but he wasn't anywhere i did what u said i trailed back and forth and all around .....no buck but i'm confident i made a perfect shot cuz it was lung blood all the way oh well i guess that's part of the hunt......... no deer guys.......... . .. i've looked for 7 hours straight ....nothin........ it was prolly a 2 1/2 year old buck oh well i'm sad for the deer but atleast i get to keep hunting........ buckee
That's a real bummer, but at least you know you gave it your all, and that's what really counts. It's a lot more than I can say for some folks. He might have ran into the water and drowned too. I haven't seen that personally, but I have seen pictures and read a few stories. Don't be too hard on yourself now...eh
scrubhunter
Hey man it happens to all of us. Atleast you gave it a good effort and thats all that can be asked. Just watch for buzzards or stray dogs in the general area for the next couple of weeks and maybe you can atleast recover the horns. Buckee mentioned drowning, I had one get into a good sized river here about 5 years ago. I watched him go in, under, and never resurfaced! It was a big 10 point I had been hunting for 2 years and I never recovered it after checking about 2 miles worth of river. That deer haunted me so bad that till this very day when I hunt that piece of land I still search the banks for tines.
SRTMO
I would do a police call. Have about 10 guys line up within sight of eachother and push through. About 25 yard intervals between people should work well. You walk the blood trail and they align on you. Don't let them bunch up or it defeats the purpose. Hounds will run a deer trail. If you know someone with a hound of some kind they might try to trail it that way for you. You may need to notify the DNR of your intention to track with a hound. We would have to here. Some people don't like their hounds chasing deer though. Good luck. Sorry you haven't found him yet. Hopefully he turns up.

Big12Eric
Good Luck in the morning I agree that the deer should be not far from where you last had blood. I had a doe last year going down a corn row bleeding then nothing. She all of the sudden did a 90 right hand cutting rows. We found her about 15 rows over. I thought we lost her. Good luck and post picture asap cause i'm sure you'll find him in the morning. Will be a sleepless night though lol
Guest baerbucks005
Alot of people make the missconception that bubbles in the blood means lung blood, this is actually not the case...there can be bubbles in it even when you dont hit a deer in the lungs. But if you hit the deer where you said you did, it sounds like you made a good shot. The best of luck to you!

GobblerBuster618
Im sorry to hear about that unfortunate situation. im not even kidding when i say the first deer i ever shot i hit her high in both lungs with a 50 caliber muzzleloading bullet and i watched her live for 2 hours before i tried to sneak down and get another shot on her. she then died on the run
