horst
Well yesterday was the first day for youth pheasant hunting here. Not a very productive day, its been raining for days on end and things are simply flooded out.The dogs didnt do to bad, my older yellow lab was a little excitable and on the only rooster we did see she jumped him outta range, seen a a lotta hens and my younger lab this was his first hunt, he listened better then I was afraid he would even if he was pretty clueless about what we were doing:) We probably walked 4 miles total and it got hot so we had to quit at noon, the dogs were tired and I think my kid was about wore out as well.No shots were fired but we had a blast, dad even joined us when we walked his section with his new wire haired griffon pup in tow.Going back out here in a few minutes, hoping an earlier start might get us into some birds before they head for the standing cornfields.Hopefully the dogs are a little calmer, the weather a little cooler and the birds are more plentifull, my son still hasnt got his first rooster:cool:

I'm guessing Iowa. Season opens next Friday here, but I'll be concentrating on deer until gun season.
horst
It was pretty bad this weekend in all reality, in 2 days we seen maybe 12 birds, only one rooster. There was way to much corn still in and all the low lying weed patches we usually hunt are pretty well under water.Funny part was we never seen another group of youth hunters, last year there were so many guys wwith thier kids out hunting it was hard to find a spot to hunt. We been working for a guy that got a couple hundred acres of CRP and pasture and another one thats got right at 80 acres of CRP, niether one will let us in to pheasant hunt but I still visit with them quite a bit. They havent seen many birds at all and theyre usually loaded with them, the whole time we shingled out there we seen 3 pheasants, all roosters:( On the bright side Sunday the dogs calmed down and worked well stayed in range for the most part making it a lot more fun for my kid.Still no shots but it was much more fun.Dont know if theres gonna be many birds this year after all, migfht have to get my kid his duck stamps and take him out goose hunting instead untill his bows ready to shoot.
